It was a beautiful day for golf and the Lady Aces took advantage of it in their match with Harrisburg’s Lady Bulldogs. We had our lowest team score of the year, co-medalists, a perfect score card and an amazing birdie!⛳️
Mady and Lilly both played even par to receive Medalist Honors... Lilly played a perfect scorecard parring every hole! While Mady had one bogie and one birdie to add to her 7 pars. Daisy posted an impressive 39! ⛳️ and We were all happy for Lauren as she played her first birdie hole in a competition! Next up for the Lady Aces is Massac County at West Berwick Golf Course on Saturday September 19, at 11:00 am.

The Lady Aces are 15-1 and their only lose was to Massac when they beat the Aces by 6 strokes at their tournament in August. The girls will be playing 18 holes.

Pritzker Squashes Hopes For Fall High School Football

TUESDAY WE TOLD YOU THERE APPEARED TO BE A GLIMMER OF HOPE THAT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL MIGHT BE ABLE TO START NEXT MONTH. BUT YESTERDAY GOVERNOR J-B PRITZKER SQUASHED THOSE HOPES SAYING CONTACT SPORTS ARE STILL A NO-GO THIS FALL. LET US PLAY RALLIES ARE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO AND SPRINGFIELD, WITH PARENTS, STUDENTS AND COACHES URGING THE GOVERNOR TO ALLOW THEM TO GET BACK ON THE FOOTBALL AND SOCCER FIELDS AND VOLLEYBALL COURTS. BUT PRITZKER SAYS IT'S STILL NOT SAFE.

PRITZKER CLAIMED THIS ISN'T A POLITICAL DECISION AND POINTS TO AN OUTBREAK AMONG THE FRONTIER COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM IN FAIRFIELD AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHY CERTAIN SPORTS SHOULD BE DELAYED. YESTERDAY, WABASH VALLEY COLLEGE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MIKE CARPENTER REPORTED THERE HAVE BEEN NO POSITIVE COVID-19 CASES AMONG THE OVER 150 STUDENT-ATHLETES AT WVC OVER THE LAST MONTH WHEN PLAYERS CAME TO CAMPUS.

Jackets Come Back To Beat West Salem On 8th Grade Night

On Tuesday, September 15th, Yellow Jackets Baseball hosted West Salem in non-conference action.  It was also 8th grade night for Chase Gher and Reed Stinson.  The Yellow Jackets were asleep at the wheel for the first three innings, as they trailed West Salem 8-2.  But a huge fourth inning, 11 runs in all, put the Yellow Jackets on top 13-8.  The Yellow Jackets then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game 17-11.  Offensively for the Yellow Jackets:  Brendan Bowser had four singles, scored twice, and had five rbi's; Kasen Dulgar had three singles, a double, scored two runs, and had three rbi; Elliott Acree had a double, a walk, scored one run, and an rbi; Chase Gher had two singles and scored two runs; Brady Porter scored a run; Reed Stinson had two singles, a walk, scored three runs, and an rbi; Michael Smith had a single, walk, hit-by-pitch, scored three runs, and had an rbi; Rhett Andrews had a walk and scored two runs; Tristan Bray had a walk and scored a run; and Jax Gher had a walk.  Kasen Dulgar started on the mound and was relieved by Elliott Acree who ended up getting the pitching win.

High School Football Still Possible This Fall In Illinois?

Could we still see Golden Aces football this fall? A rally will be held in Chicago and Springfield this weekend to support getting high school students back on the field of competition. The “Let Us Play” event will aim to fill the grounds of the Thompson Center and State Capitol with coaches, players, parents and supporters of returning all fall sports to action.

Currently in Illinois, high school football isn’t being played and supporters want that to change. East St. Louis head football coach Darren Sunkett is one of the organizers of the event and he says they have a plan to play football in just a few weeks.

Currently Illinois and Minnesota are the only states in the Midwest who have no plan to play high school football this fall.

Aces Golfers Win At Robinson

From Coach John White: Our Aces finally enjoyed an afternoon whereby we played a match performing closer to our potential. The Quail Creek CC, located in Robinson normally known for tight tree lined fairways and fast greens was the scene of our exhibition today. Our Aces overtook the Maroons 169-178.

Jarrett West came within a foot of acing his last hole for a 39. Jarrett who has been shooting low scores all year in practice rounds finally overcome the jitters and played well most of the day on the par 36 course.
Max Zimmerman’s 41 was more to his liking except for a triple bogey on the par 3 fifth hole. I have been waiting all year for these 2 seniors to show what they are capable of doing.
Long knocking Gavin Smith enjoyed most of his day while shooting 43.
For the most part Gage Kennard played well but let a couple of holes hurt his performance posting a 46.
Andrew Gillihan and Beau Stipp had struggles while seeing the course for the first time.
We took our jv team with us to play the course for the first time and overall played quite well.
Owen Dougherty was the bright spot of day by carding a 40 which was also his best score ever. Levi Beesley had good round of 47, while Isaac Kieffer and Andrew Goldman both had respectable 45. The rest of our team was in the low 50’s.
Our next match will at home Thursday against Olney.

Jackets Baseball Fall To Grayville

On Monday, September 14th, Yellow Jackets baseball hosted Grayville in WEAA Conference play.  Grayville won 13-9.  Offensively for the Yellow Jackets:  Kasen Dulgar had a single, rbi, and scored a run; Brendan Bowser had 3 singles, rbi, and scored 3 runs; Elliott Acree had a single, rbi, and scored a run; Chase Gher had a single and an rbi; Brady Porter had a walk and scored two runs; Reed Stinson had two walks and scored a run; Michael Smith had a single; Rhett Andrews had two singles and scored a run; and Tristan Bray had a walk.  Pitching for the Yellow Jackets were Brendan Bowser, Elliott Acree, and Chase Gher.

The Yellow Jackets are now 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in WEAA in WEAA Conference play.  Next up:  Yellow Jackets host West Salem on Tuesday, September 15th in a non-conference game

IHSA Board Updates Return To Activities Guidelines: Waives Two-Game Per Week Limit & Lengthens Summer Season

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met virtually for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, September 14, 2020, where the Board approved several updates to the IHSA Return To Activities guidelines, while also providing guidance on the IHSA’s independent team participation rule for the 2020-21 school year.

The Board updated its Return To Activities guidelines by waiving the 2020-21 season limitations for winter, spring, and summer sports that would have restricted those sports to no more than two contests per week. The winter, spring, and summer seasons will now revert to their normal season game limitations as dictated by IHSA by-laws.

“We have preached that this school year will be fluid, and the changes made by the Board today are a good example of that,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “When the IHSA’s initial Return To Activities guidelines were established, the limitation of two contests per week felt like a constraint that would help limit exposure. However, given how well our state is handling the pandemic, and the lack of setbacks in the fall sports we have conducted so far, there was a consensus that we could move forward with allowing schools to schedule winter, spring, and summer sports without further restrictions.”

Additionally, the IHSA’s summer season will begin two weeks earlier than initially announced. With Monday’s modification, summer sports (baseball, softball, track & field, girls soccer, lacrosse, boys tennis) can now begin practices on April 19 and games on May 3.

“We understood that when the modified schedule for 2020-21 was released that the summer sport season coaches would take some umbrage with it,” said Anderson. “However, we also knew that summer was the season that we had the most time and flexibility to work with, so we preached patience. We are glad to be able to provide some relief by creating the option to start two weeks earlier.”

Additionally, the Board reviewed a request from Highland High School that sought an exemption to IHSA By-law 3.100, which governs Independent Team Participation. Highland sought an exemption to the rule during 2020-21 for the sports of volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, baseball, and softball, which would allow student-athletes in those sports to simultaneously participate on their IHSA school team and on a non-school team. The current by-law prevents participation on a school and non-school team at the same time in the same sport. The Board elected not to provide an exemption to the rule.

“There was a lengthy and spirited discussion on if we should provide an exemption to this rule given the unprecedented nature of the school year,” said Anderson. “The Board understands both sides of the argument and has heard from passionate advocates for each scenario. Ultimately, concerns over safety and equity left them uncomfortable with providing an exemption to this rule. They understand it could lead to some difficult decisions between participating on a school or non-school team. Fundamentally, the nature and mission of the IHSA is to provide participation opportunities to all students. The Board agreed that if a student-athlete chooses to leave their school team for a non-school team, it simply creates an opportunity for another student to step in and fill that role.”

ACTION ITEMS
1. The Board approved a request from Aurora (Illinois Math and Science Academy) and Yorkville (H.S.) to dissolve their girls swimming and diving cooperative agreement between the schools for the 2020-21 school year.

2. The Board approved a budget for the 2020-21 school year.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson:
“The pandemic is having a significant impact on the IHSA financially, just as it is with countless other businesses around the country. We have made a number of freezes and cuts as a part of our 2020-21 budget to help remain financially solvent as we navigate this unprecedented school year. We will continue to evaluate and adapt our budget as necessary throughout the school year.”

APPEALS & HEARINGS
1. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Bloomington (Central Catholic). The student was ruled ineligible for not meeting compliance with IHSA By-law 3.040 and its sub-sections.

2. The Board heard an appeal request from Downers Grove North High School varsity wrestling head coach Chris McGrath, Washington High School varsity wrestling head coach Nick Miller, Lockport High School varsity wrestling head coach Josh Oster, and Nate Kessen, an IHSA official and the President-Elect of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches & Officials Association. The group requested that the IHSA wrestling season be moved from the winter to May during the 2020-21 school year. The Board tabled the appeal, citing a desire to revisit the topic at their October meeting when they can better evaluate winter sports.

DISCUSSION ITEMS
At each meeting of the Board of Directors, there are certain items the Board discusses, but upon which no action is taken. The following is a report of those items from the September 14, 2020, agenda:

1. The Board discussed the letter submitted to Governor Pritzker and Deputy Governor Ruiz by IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson on September 10. Citing the mental and physical benefits of participation for student-athletes, the letter seeks permission for the IHSA and its Sports Medicine Advisory Committee to resume control of determining the resumption of IHSA sports and activities moving forward. The Board has asked the IHSA staff to prepare accordingly for a response to the letter by government officials and an action plan for future and continued communication with the governor’s office.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson:
“The fact of the matter is that under the leadership of Governor Pritzker, Illinois has attained one of the lowest COVID-19 infection rates in the country. When you couple that with surrounding states successfully conducting high school sports, and many non-school teams being allowed to play, it feels like the appropriate time for the IHSA to be provided the ability to reexamine our situation.”

2. The Board heard an update on by-law submissions thus far. By-law submissions are due to the IHSA office by October 13, 2020 in order to be included in the 2020-21 Legislative process that begins in November.

3. IHSA Assistant Executive Director Beth Sauser announced that the IHSA will conduct the IHSA School Spirit Showdown in 2020-21 in place of the annual Student Section Showdown. For more information on how to enter the School Spirit Showdown, click here.

4. The Board heard an update on a partnership between the IHSA and Special Olympics to provide student-led courses on leadership, culminating with a Youth Leadership Certificate. To register, click here.

5. The Board expressed their gratitude to outgoing IHSA Board President Tim McConnell and Division 2 Board representative Kurt Tenopir from Fremd High School. The principal at Erie High School, McConnell presided over his final IHSA Board meeting after reaching his term-limit serving in three different terms on the Board. Tenopir announced he will not seek reelection to his seat.

6. The Board heard a report on schools who have filed waivers to play up a State Series classification. All waivers require a two-year commitment. The schools, sports, new class, and applicable years on each waiver are listed below:

School-Sport (New class & term)
Urbana (University)-Scholastic Bowl (2A in 2019-20 & 2020-21)

Zimmerman Leads Aces to 10 Shot Victory

From Coach John White:

Our golfing Aces pulled off a 10 shot victory Wednesday at home against Hamilton County. While not impressive our scores are getting a little better.

Max Zimmerman was our medalist with a 41 but let a good round get away by triple bogeying the 15th hole.
Gage Kennard followed with a 42 and Beau Stipp birdied his last hole for a 42.

Jarett West, Gavin Smith and Zach Allen, who was playing in his first varsity match all had some struggles posting a 46, 48 and 51 respectively.

Our junior varsity showed some improvement with Andrew Gillihan leading with a 43. Owen Dougherty
and Konner Kelsey both shot their best rounds ever with a 44 and 45.

Andrew Goldman Isaac Kieffer both had 46’s, followed by Zeke Swanson with a 49.

The rest of the jv team, Anthony Bleyer,Steven Hasse, Jaxon Browning, Levi Beesley, Quaide Kanipe and Garrett Hodges all shot respectable scores in the high forties and low fifties.

The vast majority of our players have only been playing golf 1 or 2 years and are showing improvement every week. For the most part our ball striking is becoming more and more acceptable BUT our wedge play and putting for lack of a better word STINKS. I would love to see this team spending more time on putting green and on the shag field practicing short wedges.

Our next match will be Friday at Lawrenceville.

Applebey's Standing Continues To Rise

Mt. Carmel senior Kaleb Applebey’s stock continues to rise. The Prep Baseball Report has vaulted Kaleb into the Top 20 rankings of Illinois high school baseball players.

From Prep Baseball Rankings:

“No prospect debuts at a higher place than Applebey, whose first appearance on this ‘21 board comes all the way up at No. 19 overall, 56 spots higher than the next new name. Applebey hails from southeastern Illinois, Mount Carmel, and he broke out this summer at the Midwest Scouts Association Showcase where he sat 88-91 mph inside a huge 6-foot-7, 230-pound frame. He K’d four of the five he faced at that event and showed very well, helping launch him up his first-ever rankings board. Applebey is also a noteworthy multi-sport athlete, having garnered attention in football as both a quarterback and tight end, though he’ll be headed to Wabash Valley JC for baseball.”

Aces Cross Country Opens Season With Win Over Carmi

Thursday, MCHS opened their 2020 Cross Country season with a Home meet against the Carmi Bulldogs. The Aces came away with a 23-35 victory.

Junior Gehrig Jones of MCHS led the way with a first place finish in the time of 19:18 over the 3 mile course. Tanner Spencer led Carmi with a second place finish. Aces runners Jason Miller, Anthony Bleyer, Caleb Carwile, Eric Leffler and Chase Keepes captured 4th thru 8th places to secure the victory.

In the girls race, neither team fielded a full team. McKenzie Willis of Carmi was individual medalist with a time of 24:38. Jada Smith led the Lady Aces with a second place finish, followed by Lily Keepes (3rd), Jayla Smith (4th) and Jacaelah Wheeler (7th).

The Aces next meet is at home versus Robinson on September 10th.

Aces Nipped By Carmi On Senior Day

From Coach John White: We had a great day for golf today in our home match at the West Berwick GC against Carmi . Even though the Bulldogs nipped us with a team score of 161–165, we played well.

Our biggest surprise was sophomore Gage Kennard who posted a 38 for team medalist honors in his first high school golf match. During the last couple of months Gage could often be seen hitting balls in the shag field working on his swing. He is a great example of how good golfers are developed. Good golfers work hard practicing different aspects of the golf swing that will hold up under pressure.

Jarrett West’s 41 is acceptable but can be better with a couple of slight adjustments.

Beau Stipp who is also new to the game shot a 43. His shot making was quite consistent but let several strokes get away with poor pitch shots.

Gavin Smith also had a 43. Gavin had a poor start but finished well despite some disappointing 3 putts.
Max Zimmerman came in with a 44. Max played some good golf but let a disappointing finish ruin his day.

Isaac Kieffer could never find his usual smooth swing while shooting a 49.

Andrew Gillihan led the JV with a 46, Levi Beesley and Conner Kelsey had 47s, Quaide Kanipe shot 48 and Jaxon Browning 49.

We travel tomorrow to Olney for an 18 hole tournament.
