Norman Thomas Steckler

Norman Thomas Steckler, of Waterloo, SC, formerly of Mt. Carmel, IL passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2019 in Laurens, SC at Laurens County Memorial Hospital, at the age of 89, from complications of pneumonia.

Norman was born in Mt. Carmel, IL on January 14, 1930 to Herman Anthony and Louisa Rose (Trapp) Steckler. He was the youngest of 6 siblings. He attended grammar school and high school in Mt. Carmel and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. When he was young, he attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel with his family.

After high school he worked with his brother Herman J. "Bud” on the family farm and with farm machinery sales. He also joined the Illinois Army National Guard from 1948-1951. There he qualified as an “Expert” marksman. After leaving the IL Army National Guard, he immediately joined the United States Air Force (USAF) for even bigger dreams and aspirations. It was in the USAF that Norman learned the skills of aircraft maintenance and electronics that took him, literally, around the world for decades to come. Some of that time was spent in the USAF, but most was spent as a civilian contractor for Lockheed Martin. His work took him to Marietta, GA working on B-47 and C-130 aircraft; Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa in the C-130 program. Then back to the states to Lake Charles, LA, as a key supervisor in quickly revitalizing their programs for overhauling aircraft. Next, he headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for 7 years, working with the Royal Saudi Air Force C-130 program, then on to Johannesburg, South Africa for 4 years working with South African Airways. After those 4 years he resigned from Lockheed Martin, to move back to the states and start an aircraft parts business and a non-destructive testing business in Florida.

Always seeking adventure, Norman in his semi-retirement moved to South Carolina and continued to work in aircraft maintenance for Pembroke Airmotive, Inc.

In full retirement, Norman enjoyed the pleasures of country living with his wife, Vicky, in South Carolina. He relaxed with the dog, mowed his lawn, grew a vegetable garden and enjoyed sports programming. Norman was a quiet man, with few words, never boasted about his adventures, his engineering talents, nor all the places NOT captured in this brief history, his-story, (so we did it for him). He loved his family, and those were his parting words before he died, “I love you.” May you know that he loved you always! Forever, will we miss him!

Norman is survived by his wife “Vicky” Beryl (Dunstan-Styles) Steckler; sons, Tom and Traci (Heintz) Steckler of Washington; Tony and Kristine (Carlson) Steckler of Arizona; Grandchildren Tiana, Tyler, Michael and Katherine Steckler; Step-daughter Lorraine (Styles) and Bob Vivash and three step grandsons and step great grandchildren all from England;

stepson, Ken Paddock and family of California. Also, he is survived by two sisters Virginia Cado of California and Louise Peter of Mt. Carmel and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lastly, Norman’s first marriage was to Sally, formally of Mt. Carmel, IL. From that marriage he had 3 children; David, Cynthia, and Beth Steckler. He always carried you in his heart.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers; Sylvester, Bud and Robert Steckler; his sons’ mother Michiko (Oka-Paddock) Steckler and stepson Mark Styles.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mt. Carmel on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 5 :00 p.m. Interment of his cremains with military honors will be held prior to this service at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Charles F. “Chuck” Gher, 65

Charles F. “Chuck” Gher, 65, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at his home surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on October 30, 1954 in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the son of Jesse and Hilda (Dunkel) Gher. Chuck married Ashli Jones on September 21, 2002.

Chuck was very proud of his family and enjoyed watching his children at their sporting events. Being a lifelong resident of Allendale, he was a huge supporter of Allendale School and could always be found volunteering at many different events. Chuck and Ashli have helped with the school’s concessions stands and this was something he always looked forward to. Among Chuck’s hobbies, he had a special love of racing and enjoyed watching NASCAR. He worked at Pacific Press & Shear for thirty-seven years. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

Chuck will be remembered by his loving wife of seventeen years, Ashli Gher of Allendale; sons, Luke Gher of Evansville, IN, Owen-Joe Gher, Wyatt Gher, Chase Gher and Jax Gher all of Allendale; daughter, Heather (Tim) Thacker of Mount Carmel; four grandchildren, Jacob, Kody, Dylan and Grace Thacker; two brothers, Joe (Cathy) Gher of Newburgh, IN and Don (Mary) Gher of Seattle, Washington; many loved nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.

Charles J. Casaleggi, 91

Charles J. Casaleggi, 91, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2019 in Mt Carmel, IL. Known as Charley, or later in life as Mr C, he was born on June 2, 1928 in Carteret, NJ. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois, and his parents Charles and Mary Casaleggi.

He will be greatly missed by his children Carol (Mike) Underriner of St Louis, MO; Laura (Brian) Clark of Park Ridge, IL; Paul (Jane) Casaleggi of Mt Carmel, IL; Mark (Sue) Casaleggi of St. Louis, MO; and Lois (Dave Diamond) Casaleggi of Chicago, IL. His grandchildren are Paula (Kelly) Devillier, Carolyn (AJ) Daughtry Krill, Maria Casaleggi, Anna Casaleggi, Quinn Underriner, Forrest Casaleggi, and Alex Diamond. He referred to his two great grandchildren, Willow and Ember Daughtry Krill, as “The Little Ones.”

Charley and Lois were married in 1954 and raised their family in Middletown, NJ. After moving to Mt Carmel in 1971 they still enjoyed the east coast and often vacationed in New Jersey with family and friends. After Charley’s retirement, they regularly visited Cape May, NJ, which became one of their favorite places.

Charley graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology and focused his entire career in the automotive and aeronautics filter industry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and worked for Purolator before moving to Mt. Carmel. He worked as Vice President of Operations at Champion Labs. Here he initiated several expansions that allowed the company to grow and contribute to the lives of many families in the area. Charley understood the complex world of manufacturing, but always maintained that the most important aspect of any corporation is the people. He believed that when the employees are well cared for, the company would flourish.

During the last five years of his life Charley lived at Oakview Heights. The family is very grateful for the talented staff and the attentive care he received there.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, 125 W 5th St, Mt Carmel, IL on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Visitation with the family at 9:30, Mass at 10:30, and luncheon immediately following at the church.

Melinda K. “Mindy” Moore, 55,

Melinda K. “Mindy” Moore, 55, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at St. Vincent Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on July 5, 1964 in Princeton, Indiana, the daughter of John and Mary (Turnbloom) Wilkinson. Mindy married Roy Moore on May 17, 2003 and together they enjoyed sixteen years of marriage.

Mindy loved her family and she treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. She was a talented writer and would often create beautiful poems. She was also gifted in making arts and crafts. She loved nature and always enjoyed being outdoors and fishing with her family. She was a very hard worker and spent the last several years as a cook at the Road Ranger. She also worked for Rod and Debbie Rodriguez for many years helping with maintenance and many other tasks. Mindy attended Heartland Worship Center in Mount Carmel.

Mindy will be remembered by her husband, Roy Moore; mother, Mary Wilkinson children, Damon (Kristina) Sloss, Lindsay Moore, Dustin (Robin) King Moore, Amber Moore, James (Kenzie) Iglehart, Melanie (John) McGillam, Patrick (Dee) Iglehart and Derick (Lexis) Wilkinson; twenty four grandchildren; brothers, Greg (Connie) Wilkinson and Jimmy (Raven) Wilkinson; sisters, Theresa (Brett Bradley) Auler, Tira (David) Fields and Ellen (Greg) Edwards; in laws, Betty (Donnie) Jackson, Albert (Melissa) Moore and Kathy (Ron) Pulliam; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Michael D. Hill, 72

Michael D. Hill, 72, of Mount Carmel, Illinois passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019 at St. Vincent Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana. He was born on January 7, 1947 in Wayne County, Illinois, the son of James and Reta (Stewart) Hill.

Mike faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal which is given to wounded Veterans. He was a self-employed carpenter and was skilled at woodworking. He enjoyed making things around the house. During Mike’s younger years, he worked at P & Hirsch department store in Mount Carmel for many years. He also worked in the heating & air industry. Among his hobbies, Mike enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and just spending time with family. Mike loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him.

Mike will be remembered by his sons, David Hill of Mount Carmel and Eric (Katie Paynter) Hill of Millington, TN; daughters, Amy (Keith) Poehlein of Gentryville, IN; grandchildren, Raven, Garrett, Jayda and Josh; brother, John Hill of Mount Carmel; sister, Mary (Jeff) Linson of Mount Carmel; many loved nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Russell Hill.

Evalyn I. Allen, 83

Evalyn I. Allen, 83, of Mount Carmel, Illinois passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Patton, Illinois on December 11, 1935 the daughter of Elva and Wyaneda (Wilson) Nanney.

Evalyn worked for twenty-nine years at Wabash General Hospital in the admissions department before her retirement. In her spare time, she enjoyed yard work and decorating the yard with ornaments that she had made. Evalyn liked to crochet and made many gifts for her family and friends. She enjoyed daily exercise of riding her bicycle three miles a day. Evalyn loved her family deeply and was very proud of all of them. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Evalyn will be lovingly remembered by her children, Paul (Teri Viloa) Allen, David (Shelly) Allen, Sharon (Joey) Grama, Debra Allen, fourteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; brother, Eldon (Debra) Nanney; sisters, Pamela Edwards, Donna Orr; son-in-law, Jeff Gray; many loved nieces and nephews and a special neighbor, Kevin Baize, who was like a son to Evalyn.

Evalyn was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Cynthia Gray; sisters, Norma Jean McCrary and Phyllis Morgan.

Jack J. Rossiano, 71

Jack J. Rossiano, 71, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at home, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on November 22, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Jack and Bessie (Nyiri) Rossiano.

Jack faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds but most especially Major League Baseball. Jack enjoyed old western movies and was a Lone Ranger fan. He loved spending time with his great nieces and nephews. Jack was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Mount Carmel. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Jack will be remembered by his brothers, Danny (Wilma) Rossiano and Bobby (Christina) Rossiano, both of Chicago, IL; sisters, Gloria Vincent of Chicago, IL, Bessie Rossiano of Olney, IL, Patricia (Stuart) Smith of Mount Carmel, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; nephews, Austin Zuber, Gavin Griffith; niece, Brooklyn Frazier; brother-in-law Al Vincent.

Eva Maye Annerino, 93

Eva Maye Annerino, 93, of Des Plaines, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her home on October 12th, 2019. She was born on July 3rd, 1926 in Allendale, Wabash County, IL to her parents Emmett D. Couch and Jennie Belle (Leek) Couch.

Her life was full of family. She grew up helping her dad in the field and starting her education in a one-room schoolhouse before going on to graduate from Allendale High School in 1944.

She was always an independent and spirited woman with the confidence to pursue her dreams. She went from humble beginnings to owning and managing properties in Chicago. In her later years, when most people would have retired, she enjoyed transporting cars between dealerships in the surrounding areas. And this is where she met her love, Ed.

Even in her youth she had an admirable work ethic and never wanted to quit; she reluctantly retired at age 87. From growing up driving a team of horses in the country to driving luxury cars in the city, she loved to drive fast and never got a single ticket. There was no stopping ‘Nonnie’, as she was affectionately known.

Her years provided both joys and challenges. Later in life she would enjoy sharing stories of her many experiences and life lessons with her own family as it grew.

Through the years she was always known to keep her word and be generous, especially with her family. She kept a lovely home where family and friends were always welcomed, loved and fed. It was at her home where everyone got to enjoy her real talents as an amazing cook.

She was a remarkable and multifaceted woman and will be missed by many.

Always remembered lovingly by her longtime companion, Edward Caropepe; daughter, Jennifer Shaun (David) Simmons; four grandchildren: Bradley (Julia) Pemberton, Renee (Jon) Adam, Veronica Pemberton, Stuart (Alexis) Pemberton; five great-grandchildren: Quinn Pemberton, Lily Pemberton, Lincoln Pemberton, Tyler Pemberton, Ava Adam; Sister, June Ilene (Fred) Xanders; two nephews, Greg (Pattie) Xanders, Kevin Xanders; Niece, Misty (Paul) Kiefer; and great-nephew, Kyle Kiefer.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 20, 2019, from 11:00 until 12:30 in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Adams Corner Cemetery.

Wanda Lee Case, 83

Wanda Lee Case, 83, of Mt. Carmel, IL, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 11, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital of Evansville, IN.

She was born June 8, 1936 in Wabash County, Illinois the daughter of Ozro Joseph Hussey and Ethel Mae (Ridgely) Hussey-Abell. She married Dallas W. Case August 8, 2003. He preceded her in death October 27, 2018.

 Wanda worked as a hospital receptionist and secretary. She attended Allendale High School, graduating in 1954.

She was a member of Church of the Nazarene. She loved her family and playing the piano, singing music and reading her Bible. She and her husband, Dallas enjoyed singing Christian music together for friends at Heritage Plaza and other places. Wanda wrote some of the music they sang. When at home she would listen to Christian CD. She was a faithful Christian.

 Those left to cherish her memory are her four children, Sherry Byrd and husband John, Randall Dicus and wife Carol, Michal Dicus and wife Bev, Kevin Dicus and Micky; stepdaughter, Amanda Robb and husband Chris; thirteen grandchildren, Carie Richardson, Shannon Daniels, Billy Dicus, Brandon Dicus, Nicholas Dicus, Misty McQueen, Katelyn Ash, Jennifer Shoulders, Karen Dicus, Adena Dicus, Emily Siverely, Peyton Robb, Brandon Robb; nineteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Robinson and Wilma Gerrish; brother, Donald Hussey; and several nieces and nephews.

 Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dallas; two brothers, Randall Hussey and David Abell; two sisters Eva Mae Hussey and Charlotte Barhart; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

 Funeral Service for Wanda will be Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home with Visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Orio Cemetery.

Opal Sprinkle, 101

Opal Sprinkle, 101, of Mount Carmel, Illinois passed away Friday, October 11, 2019 at Wabash General Hospital surrounded by the love of her family. She was born August 11, 1918 in Charleston Arkansas, the daughter of Granville Lee and Mary Katherine (Brown) Mitchell. She married Lloyd Sprinkle who preceded her in death.

Opal was devoted homemaker. Spending time in her yard and garden brought her great pleasure. She enjoyed sewing for her family and her home. Opal loved listening to Southern Gospel music and attended concerts as long as she was able. She was a member of Lancaster Zion United Methodist Church. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Opal will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Deena Kurtz and her husband, Dale; sisters, Lorine Sanders, La Juana Hampton; sisters in law, Wanda Mitchell, Elnora Deisher; and many nieces and nephews.

Annette Joyce Kemper (Mowatt), 77

Annette Joyce Kemper (Mowatt), 77, of Hendersonville, TN, formerly of Mt. Carmel, IL, passed away peacefully Friday, October 4th, 2019 at her home. She was born October 12, 1941 in Princeton, IN, the eldest of three children to Morris and Irene (Simpson) Kemper, both of whom preceded her in death.

Annette graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1959 and attended Southern Illinois University.

She is survived by a daughter, Stephanie (Mowatt) Carlson and her husband Bob of Woodridge, Illinois; grandson Scott Carlson and granddaughters Haley Mowatt, Natalie (Carlson) Yasskin and her husband Bennett, and Melanie Carlson; brother Jim Kemper and his wife Mai; nieces Jeannie Bilskie, Jo Anne Shular, Tiffany Seaton, Tammy Rhodes, Mina Nolan, Moya Thompson, Misa Thomas, and Madea Gordon; and nephews Tim Kemper and Troy Kemper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Irene Kemper, her sister, Nancy Shular and her son Steven Mowatt.

During her lifetime Annette followed many of her passions, including her creativity demonstrated through her love of arts and crafts; her exceptional golf abilities, winning many tournaments including the Evansville Country Club Women’s Championship in 1989; and her interest in the latest consumer technologies. She later had an interest in essential oils and was passionate about helping others through natural healing.

Larry Franklin Banks, age 68

Larry Franklin Banks, age 68 of Foley, Alabama (formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois) passed from this life to the next early on the morning of Friday, September 27, 2019 at the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center.

Larry was born in Princeton, Indiana on December 12, 1950 to Albert F. and Ruth L. (Mayhall) Banks.

He was a Veteran who served his country in the US Marine Corps for a total of seven years.

He married DiAnna Gaddy on December 11, 1982 in Dundas, Illinois. Larry and DiAnna enjoyed almost thirty-seven years of a wonderful marriage partnership.

He was a hard worker and for several years was employed in the old fields and was also a truck driver; working most recently before his retirement for Schneider Trucking Company.

Larry enjoyed activities from working in the yard to working puzzles. He never met a stranger and could always engage even the most shy person in a lively conversation. His greatest enjoyment was being with his close friends and his family.

Those family members who will miss him greatly include: his father, Albert F. Banks, his wife, DiAnna Banks, daughters: Dannette L. Lewis, Annette L. Fortner and Christina K. Hicks, sons: Aaron B. Banks and Thomas Lewis, Sr. Larry will also be missed by his sister, Regina Lear and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth L. Banks and two grandchildren, Erica Hicks and Devon Hicks; whom he has reunited with once again.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 10AM to 11AM at the Ingram-Meridith Funeral Home in Allendale, IL.

At 11AM, Pastor Stephen Freels will speak briefly at the funeral home and then give concluding remarks at the committal service, which will take place at the Zion United Methodist Cemetery.

The cemetery is located two miles west and one-half mile south of the Billet, Illinois road which is just off Route 1.

Military Rites will be given at the graveside committal.

George W. Woodcock, 89

George W. Woodcock, 89, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 13, 1930, in Brownsville, Kentucky, the son of Melittia (VanMeter) and George Washington Woodcock, Sr.  After graduating Brownsville High School, George entered the U.S. Army.   He served our country from 1947 through 1948.  From 1952 until 1953 George served in Korea as a Lt. in the 45th Division 180th Infantry Regiment.

Upon his return, he enrolled at Western Kentucky University for undergraduate courses and continued his education at the University of Kentucky graduating with a law degree.  George started his law practice in Morgantown, Kentucky.  In 1957 he moved to Mt. Carmel, Illinois, forming a law practice as McGaughey, McGaughey, Henry and Woodcock.  In March of 1962 George opened his own law practice.  He was a member of the Illinois Bar Association and Kentucky Bar Association.

At this point, he also began being actively involved in politics. George was elected State’s Attorney of Wabash County and served from 1968 through 1972.  In 1972 and 1976 he was elected delegate to the Republican National Convention.  In 1972, George was elected President of the Illinois Republican’s County Chairman’s Association, and in 1974, he was elected to be a State Member of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee.  George ran for and was elected Mayor of Mt. Carmel.  He served four terms, 1979 to 1986 and 1995 to 2003, starting the drive to build a new bridge over the Wabash River. 

On July 4, 1979, George married Marcia Hudson.  They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year.  He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

For 50 years George was a member of the following organizations:  The Brotherhood Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 715, where he served as Exalted Ruler, The American Legion, serving as Past Commander of the Mt. Carmel Post, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Shriner’s International Ainad Temple and Wabash Valley Shrine Club and The Washington Meredith Masonic Lodge in Brownsville, Kentucky.  He was a member of Mt. Carmel Eagles Club.

He served as a member of The Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club in Mt. Carmel, was the original organizer for the booster’s club at Wabash Valley College and one of the four members who was instrumental in starting Little League Football in Mt. Carmel.  In addition, George served as Director for The First National Bank of Allendale for 30 years and Director and Vice-President for the Bank of Edmonson County for over 40 years.

Left to cherish George’s memory is his wife of 40 years, Marcia; children, Margaret Nell Woodcock, Marilynn Woodcock Bader and her husband, Mark and George W. Woodcock, III and his wife Pam, all of Mt. Carmel; grandchildren, Jeremy Scott Bader, Jennifer (John) Adams, Katie Potts, Nathan (Amy) Woodcock, Hannah (Jon) Jent, Jordan Woodcock and MacKenzie (Sebastian) Price; great-grandchildren, Grace, Emma, John Lee and Addison Adams, Wyatt and Xander Bader, Mason and Aubrey Potts, Stella, Scarlett and Sophia Woodcock, Isabella, Ava and Georgia Jent, Harlow, Eloise and Ivy Price; siblings, Helen Edwards, Alma Chapman and Scottie (Ethel) Woodcock; and, Margaret (Peet) Woodcock, the mother of his children.

George was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Edward George Woodcock and Barbara Woodcock Donahue.

Funeral services for George will be held Monday, September 30, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 512 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Friends and family are welcome for a visitation Sunday, September 29, 2019, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  A Masonic service will be at 6:00 p.m.

Jimmy L. “Jim” McVaigh 51

Jimmy L. “Jim” McVaigh 51, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019.  He was born on October 28, 1967 in Berryville, Illinois, the son of Gene and Glenna (Jones) McVaigh.  He married Tracee Tennis and she survives. 

 Jim was a very hard-working man.  He owned and operated McVaigh Welding Shop in Wabash County for the past twelve years.  He was very good at his trade and in every job he did, he gave it his all.   Jim was previously employed at the Albion Police Department and the Edwards County Sheriff’s Department.  He taught the Concealed Carry Class to area residents.  In his spare time, he loved fishing, hunting, trail riding and camping with his family.  He greatly enjoyed the outdoors.  Jim loved his children and wife.  He will be dearly missed.

 Jim is survived by his wife, Tracee; son, Mitchell McVaigh of Albion, IL; daughters, Rae McVaigh and Glenna McVaigh of Mt. Carmel; father, Gene McVaigh; and brother, Bert McVaigh.

 Jim was preceded in death by his mother; and one brother, Neal McVaigh.

Funeral Report-Robert Donne Leo Mann

Funeral Services were held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday September 22, 2019 at the E.U.M. Church to honor the life of Robert Donne Leo Mann. Pastors Jeremy Henson and Bill Bunnage conducted the service which included Prayers, Scripture Readings, Memories, Words of Hope and Blessing. Keyboard and organ music were provided by Sherry Beck and RoseAnn Capin. Congregational songs included “A New Name In Glory”, “Blessed Be The Name” and “Victory In Jesus”. Chris Quick sang “No One Cared For Me Like Jesus” and “Precious Lord Take My Hand”. Special music performed by Maggie, Gracie, Titus and Silas Mann included “Amazing Grace” and “Love Song”. The closing song was a recording by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole of “Unforgettable”. Burial took place at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Coleman, Kyle Mann, Duane Parks, Joe Holstein, Bill Quick, Mike Steckler, Don Shepard and Don Macer. Keepes Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Don Mann.

Dr. Tommy R. Young II, 78

Dr. Tommy R. Young II, 78, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at The Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Indiana surrounded by the love of his family. He was born August 10, 1941 in Princeton, Indiana, the son of Dr. Tommy R. Young and Katherine (Anstaett) Young. He married Joyce Brewer on June 25, 1966 and together they enjoyed fifty-three years of marriage.

At the age of fourteen, Tommy attended the Kentucky Military Institute where he graduated in 1959. Tommy was a graduate of DePauw University, University of Arkansas and Louisiana State University obtaining his PhD in American History. He had quite an extensive teaching career teaching at Texas Tech University, US Army Command & General Staff College, the University of Missouri, Kansas City, St. Mary’s College at Kansas State Men’s Penitentiary and the US Disciplinary Barracks. In 1981 Tommy went to work as a historian at the Air Force Communications Command Center. He would later transfer to the Office of History at the Air Mobility Command. Tommy retired in September of 2001, then he and Joyce returned to the family home in Mt. Carmel. In Retirement he continued to write encyclopedia articles on Military Communications. In addition, he wrote a history of the Kentucky Military Institute. Tommy also served on the Board of the Wabash County Museum and was a member of the Board of the Wabash Valley College Foundation.

Tommy will forever be remembered by his wife, Joyce; son, Jeffrey Young his wife, Sarah of Swansea, Illinois; granddaughter, Katherine Young; and many friends he made all throughout his life.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tommy R. Young III.

In keeping with Tommy’s wishes, there will be no public services. A private burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Robert Donne Leo Mann, 88

Robert Donne Leo Mann, 88, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at his residence with his wife and son, Matthew Mann by his side. He was born on July 15, 1931 in Wabash County, Illinois, the son of Franklin and Mattie (Leek) Mann. He graduated from Allendale High School Class of 1950. Don married Janet Rigg on November 10, 1960 at the E.U.B. Church in Mount Carmel.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was his number one priority and he treasured the time he spent with them. A strong work ethic was a trait Don carried with him throughout his life. He began working at the age of twelve and retired in 1996. Don worked in road construction as a heavy equipment operator and worked for over twenty-five years at Mount Carmel Sand & Gravel. Among Don’s hobbies, he loved working in his garden and tinkering on things around his house. He was a proud member of the IUOE # 841 since 1957. Don was a faithful member of E.U.M. Church in Mount Carmel, IL. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Don will be remembered by his loving wife of fifty eight years, Janet Mann; three sons, Michael (Julia) Mann of Glen Ellyn, IL, Monte (Helen) Mann of Acworth, GA and Matthew (Julie) Mann of Mount Carmel; ten grandchildren, Emily (Eric) Shekarabi, Jillian Mann, Elizabeth (Jeremy) McClung, Jonathon Mann, Bryce Mann, Clayton Mann, Maggie Mann, Gracie Mann, Silas Mann and Titus Mann; one great grandchild, Valerie Mink; brother in law, Phillip Parks; two sister in laws, Mary Mann and Dixie Mann; several loved nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean Parks; brothers, Dennis Mann and Dean Mann.

Doris R. “Dot” Tolley, 89

Doris R. “Dot” Tolley, 89, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 17, 2019 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on January 2, 1930 in Norris City, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Forrester) Gidcumb. She married James R. “Bob” Tolley on April 12, 1949 in Maunie, IL and he preceded her in death on August 1, 2015 after sixty-six years of marriage.

Dot began working at Hadley’s Café in 1963 and remained a valued employee there until it’s closing in 2009. She was well known in the community for her delicious pies. One particular Thanksgiving, she baked over one hundred pies for area families. Dot loved to cook and bake for her family. She could often be found in her kitchen singing while cooking a delicious meal. Dot also enjoyed gardening. She had a love for roses and could grow some absolute beauties. Dot was very hardworking and had a kind soul. She never met a stranger. She lovingly referred to her husband as “Her Bob” and he in turn called her “His Doris”. Dot was a member of First General Baptist Church. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

Dot will be remembered by her daughter, Joanne (Steve) Elliott of Mount Carmel; grandchildren, Dena (Warren) Tarpley, Tracey (Jeff) Kell and Shad Elliott; five great-grandchildren, Andrew (Kaycee) Curtis, Courtney (Brandon) Roberts, Nate (Casey) Kell, Mackenzie Kell and Alli Kell; great-great-grandson, Kayden Ray Roberts; sisters, Dorothy Banks, Phyllis Edwards; and one brother, Don Gidcumb.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson-in-law, John Curtis; four brothers; and three sisters.

Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2019 at Bethel Cemetery in Bellmont, Illinois with Pastor Gary Underwood officiating. Dot will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Bob. No public Visitation will be held. Please meet at the cemetery.
