On Thursday, February 1st, the Allendale Yellow Jackets hosted the Albion Lions in the opening game of the 2018 season. In the C-match, the Yellow Jackets fell in defeat in three games, 25-13, 20-25, 11-15. In the B-match, Allendale again fell in three games, 15-25, 25-21, 4-15. In the A-match, the Yellow Jackets were defeated in two games, 15-25 and 11-25.
Next up for the Yellow Jackets: Monday, February 5th at West Salem with the C-game beginning at 5:15 pm.
Wabash Valley basketball teams will be at home Saturday to take on Lake Land College. Another big GRAC contests for both teams.
The Lady Lakers come in 6-4 in the GRAC and 14-7 overall. They have won six of their last eight games. They defeated Olney Central 74 to 69 and Rend Lake 82 to 57 in their last two games. The Lady Warriors are 10-0 in the GRAC and 19-2 overall and ranked 12th in this week’s JUCO Poll.
The Lakers are 8-2 in the GRAC and hold down second place. They are 14-6 overall. They have had some close games and some into overtime in the last two weeks. They lost on the road to Olney Central 110 to 109 and then to Rend Lake at home 104 to 109 in double overtime. They also lost to Lewis and Clark at home 99 to 93. This is a win that the Warriors let get away at Lake Land in late November. WVC comes into the game 13-8 and 6-4 in the GRAC.
The teams have two road games next week. Play at Southwestern on Wednesday and then at Kaskaskia on Saturday.
Mt. Carmel's five seniors were honored prior to tonight's game against Olney.

After playing four of their last five games on the road the Wabash Valley College basketball teams will be home the next two games. On Wednesday they will play Olney Central and Saturday they will host Lake Land College. Saturday’s game is homecoming for Wabash. Both teams have better GRAC records than the WVC teams so it is time to win at home and move up in the standings of the conference.
Olney Lady Blue Knights come in 14-6 and in second place in the GRAC with an 8-2 record. They have won their last two games and beat Kaskaskia on Saturday 66 to 61. Top scorer is sophomore guard Kayla Sanford from North Posey HS averaging 11.7 ppg.
The Blue Knights are 13-6 and 6-4 in the GRAC. They have wins in January over Rend Lake on the road and then at home beat Lake Land in OT 110 to 109 and then Saturday they won 80 to 78. They have explosive guards in Josiah Wallace 21.1 ppg and Erikas Jakstys who averages 15.8 ppg. Both are shooting over 40% from behind the arc.
WVC Warriors are 12-8 and 5-4 in the GRAC while the women are 17-2 and 9-0 in the conference. Both teams will be looking to put together wins streaks after taking tough losses at Vincennes on Saturday.

On Saturday, January 27th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets C-team participated in the Clay City 6th grade tournament. In game 1, the Yellow Jackets defeated Albion by the final score of 35-7. Scoring for Allendale were: Trentin Casburn with 10 points, Matthew Jackson with 8 points, Kollin Kelsey with 6 points, Carlos Monroy with 5 points, Clay Morgan with 4 points, and Chandler Cusick with 2 points.
With the Yellow Jackets in the winner's brackets, they next played against Cisne for a chance to play in the Championship game. Cisne won the game 27-18. Scoring for Allendale were: Trentin Casburn with 8 points, Kollin Kelsey with 4 points, Carlos Monroy with 4 points, and Matthew Jackson with 2 points.
With the loss to Cisne, the Yellow Jackets played in the 3rd place game against South Central. Allendale won the game 41-23 and claimed 3rd place in the tournament. Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were: Trentin Casburn with 12 points, Matthew Jackson with 12 points, Kollin Kelsey with 11 points, Carlos Monroy with 4 points, and Chandler Cusick with 2 points.
The Allendale Yellow Jackets C-team finished 9-2 on the season.
On Friday, January 26th, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets C Team traveled to Olney to take on the St. Joe Lady Wildcats. St. Joe defeated St. Mary’s 24 – 12. St. Mary’s trailed 5 - 3 at the end of the first quarter; trailed 14 -7 at halftime; and trailed 20 – 10 at the end of the third quarter.
Nora Jones scored 10 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Madison Stevens added 2 points. Also seeing playing time were Lily Keepes, Sarah McCorkle, Kali Walker, and Ava Turner. Isabella Trupiano had 14 points for the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Rockets (5th – 8th grade) will be in action on Tuesday, January 30th, at 6pm, when they will play the St. Mary’s Rockets (boy’s team) in the annual Hoops for Hope Game. All are welcome.

Yesterday, legislation was introduced to ban organized tackle football in Illinois for those under 12 years old. Aces coach Michael Brewer joined us on today's Friday Sports Show to talk about the proposal and how it would affect football in Mt. Carmel if enacted.

Aces basketball coach Tyler Buss joined us on today's Friday Sports Show to review the Aces' co-championship of the CWCIT and look ahead to Saturday's Senior Night game against Boonville.
On Thursday, January 25th, the SIJHSAA Class S Regional continued with semifinal action at Wabash Valley College. In the first game of the evening, 3-seed New Hebron defeated 2-seed Clay City by the score 53-36. Leading scorers for New Hebron were Nathan Wernz with 18 points, Nagatu Goodrich with 11 points, Preston Green with 10 points, and John Rich with 10 points. Clay City was led by Bryce Marshoff with 12 points.
In game 2 of the night, 1-seed St. Joe (Olney) defeated 4-seed Allendale by the final score of 47-14. Leading scorers for St. Joe (Olney) were Evan Uhl with 15 points, Gabriel Rodriguez with 10 points, and Alec Kocher with 10 points. Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were Bryce Lane with 8 points, JD Bowser with 4 points, and Owen Gher with 2 points. The Yellow Jackets A-team ended up 5-13 on the season.
The Championship Game for the SIJHSAA Class S Regional will be on Monday, January 29th featuring St. Joe (Olney) vs. New Hebron beginning at 6 pm at Wabash Valley College.

On Tuesday, January 23rd, Wabash Valley College played host to the opening night of the Class S Region 16 SIJHSAA Boy's Basketball Regional.
In Game 1, 3-seeded New Hebron defeated 6-seeded West Salem by the final score of 39-17. Leading scorers for New Hebron were Nathan Wernz with 17 points and Nagatu Goodrich with 12 points. Leading scorer for West Salem was Zane Hayes with 13 points. New Hebron will now play Thursday evening at 6:00 pm against #2 seed Clay City.
In Game 2 of the night, 4-seeded Allendale Yellow Jackets defeated the 5-seeded St. Mary's Rockets by the final score of 42-37. After one quarter of play, the Yellow Jackets led 11-10 and expanded their lead going into halftime to 28-20. St. Mary's came out strong in the third quarter and went on a 10-2 run to tie it up at 30-30 with 2:30 minutes to play in the quarter. But, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-2 run to end the quarter and played to a draw in the fourth quarter to win the game. Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were: Kollin Kelsey with 21 points, JD Bowser with 17 points, Trentin Casburn with 3 points, and Owen Gher with 1 point. Scoring for the Rockets were: Elliott Acree with 10 points, Gehrig Jones with 9 points, Andrew Goldman with 9 points, Steven Haase with 5 points, and Jesse Brogan with 4 points.
Allendale will now play Thursday evening at 7:15 pm against the #1 seed St. Joe (Olney).
Wabash Valley College basketball teams are finally back home. They have played five of their last six games on the road. Wednesday evening at the Spencer Sports Center they will host Southeastern Illinois College. The women will tip off at 5:30 and the men to follow at 7:30. The Lady Warriors are ranked 9th in last week’s poll up two spots from the week before. Coach Luke Scheidecker team has won 12 in a row now and is 17-1 on the season and 8-0 in the GRAC.
The Warriors are going to be looking to get back on the winning track after winning seven in a row they have dropped their last two games on the road. Coach Mike Carpenters team is 11-7 and 4-4 in the GRAC.
On Monday, January 22nd, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets C Team hosted the Jasper Grade School (Fairfield) Lady Polecats. The Lady Rockets defeated the Lady Polecats 42 – 12.
St. Mary’s trailed 6 - 4 at the end of the first quarter; however, the Lady Rockets were able to take a 16 – 8 lead into halftime, and led 28 -12 at the end of the third quarter. Madison Stevens scored 18 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Nora Jones added 10 points, Sarah McCorkle 6 points, Lily Keepes 4 points, Kali Walker 2 points, and Ava Turner 2 points. Ava Best had 6 points for Jasper.
St. Mary’s C Team travels to Olney St. Joe this Friday, January 26th, to take on the Lady Wildcats. The Lady Rockets will play at 6pm, followed by the St. Mary’s Rockets (boys) C Team game.
From Coach Logan Crum: Aces wrestlers finish a close 2nd in Big 8 championship. Vincennes won it with 193 total points followed by Mt Carmel with 177. Every one of our wrestlers placed 1-4 so I am very pleased. Individual results below.
