Mary A. Robinson, 95

Mary A. Robinson, 95, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Oakview Heights Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by the family she so loved.

Mary was born July 15, 1926, in Wabash County, Illinois, the daughter of Ozro and Ethel (Ridgley) Hussey. She married John Merle Robinson October 3, 1948, in Orio, Illinois. They were married for sixty-six years until his death in 2015.

She was a member of Wabash Presbyterian Church in Orio, Illinois and was Chairwoman of the Country Store at the Orio Chowder for many years. Mary’s family was always first in her life. She enjoyed cooking meals for them, working in her flower garden and painting pictures for them.   

Those left to cherish Mary’s memory include her sister, Wilma Gerrish of Mt. Carmel; brother, Don Hussey of Houston Texas; daughter-in-law Connie Perkins of Weatherford, Texas; grandchildren, Robin Marriott of Mt. Carmel, Mary Anne Lowery of Dallas, Texas, Carla Kuhlenschmidt of Princeton, Indiana, Shaina Covey of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Chris Robinson of Jacksonville, Florida, and Kelly Turner of Jefferson City, Missouri; 13 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; sons Dennis Perkins, Rick Robinson, and Johnny Robinson; grandson, Pat Robinson; sisters Wanda Case and Charlotte Barnhart; two brothers, David Abell and Randall Hussey.

Visitation and Funeral Service for Mary will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at Wabash Presbyterian Church, Orio, Illinois. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 11:00 a.m. until the service begins at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow the service in Orio Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.

Cary Scott Kieffer, 47

Cary Scott Kieffer, 47, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.  He was born on December 14, 1974, in Mount Carmel, the oldest of four children to Timothy J. Kieffer and Cynthia L. Wolfe. 

 Cary was a member of the 1993 Graduating Class of Mount Carmel High School.  He was a four-year athlete with the Golden Aces Football Team playing Center position.  He attended Wabash Valley College and began a career in automobile sales, working in the family-owned business, Wolfe’s Illiana Auto Sales in Bridgeport, IL, and then transferred to Wolfe’s Auto Auctions in Terre Haute, IN, where he was General Manager.  More recently, he found his purpose in helping other men in their recovery journey through the Evansville Rescue Mission.  Cary had a deep love of music and he and his dad shared the God-given talent of being able to play guitar and keyboard by ear.  He greatly enjoyed strumming a tune on his favorite guitar and singing along.  Cary was interested in cars and enjoyed riding motorcycles.  He had a great sense of humor, quick wit, and always wanted to make people laugh.  He was very kind and caring, with a big heart of gold, and willing to help anyone he could.  Cary loved his whole family dearly, but being “Uncle Bubba” to his nephew and four nieces was the absolute love of his life.  He will always be loved and remembered by his family and many friends. 

 Cary leaves behind his father, Tim Kieffer and significant other, Chris Frymire; mother, Cynthia Wolfe; brother, Brandon Kieffer and wife Miranda; sisters, Chastity Nisbeth and husband, Chad, Bria Enloe and husband Michael; one nephew, Landon Kieffer; four nieces, Addyson Kieffer, Kennedy Nisbeth, Kaylee Nisbeth, and Zoey Enloe; maternal grandparents, Tony and Susan Wolfe; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

 Cary was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Norman and Aleyda Kieffer; and maternal great-grandparents, John and Elizabeth Wolfe.

 Family and friends may gather for a Memorial Visitation from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday, April 4, 2022, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.  A Prayer Service will conclude the Visitation at 6:00 p.m.

Robert J. Larkin, 75

Robert J. Larkin, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022, at Wabash General Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.  He was born on December 2, 1946, the eighth child of Harvey and Mary Elva (Brown) Larkin.  After graduating from Carmi Township Highschool, and just before joining the United States Air Force, Bob married Patricia Odom on December 3, 1965, in Carmi, at the Church of Christ.

Bob’s occupations ranged from oilfield worker to mechanic to coal miner which he worked for thirty-five plus years.  Throughout his life he enjoyed sports of all kinds.  Hunting and archery were among his favorites and later in life his favorites were swimming, hunting, and golfing.  Bob was an active member of the Mount Carmel Church of Christ and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.  He was a kind man whose big smile, boisterous laugh and big hugs will be greatly missed.

Bob leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-six years, Pat; two daughters, Rebekah Leach and husband Michael, Robin Jones and husband Jerry; six grandchildren, Caleb Leach, Brookelyn Bohach, Jonathan Leach, Avery Webb, Matthew Leach, and Sydney Jones; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; two sisters, Jean (Floyd) James of Arkansas and Naomi (Larry) Mattingly of Mississippi; a special uncle and aunt, John and Marcia Brown of Tulsa Oklahoma; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Janice Larkin, Edna Larkin, and Lois Dunnagan; two brothers, Richard, and Raymond Larkin.

Frances Scott, 74

Frances Scott, 74, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away March 20, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her River Oaks family.

She was born March 18, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Princena Scott. Franny attended Gospel Kingdom Church. She was a client at WAVE.

Franny lived at Rivers Oaks since 2007. She enjoyed gospel and country music. Franny loved everyone around her.

Left to cherish Franny’s memory is her adopted mother, Kris Markle; siblings, Ronnie Jacobs and Kim Walston; niece,Tori and two nephews, Jaxon and Vincent; one great nephew and a great niece; and her River Oaks and WAVE families.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery at a later date.

Clayton Edward Seaton, 92

Clayton Edward Seaton, 92, of Allendale, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2022, with his children by his side.

He was born on September 13, 1929, to Elmer and Mina Seaton.  Clayton married Janette Sparks on October 22, 1950.

Surviving are three children: Nancy (Garland) Sanders, Cathy Seaton and Brad Seaton, all of Allendale; two grandsons, Aaron Sanders, St. Louis, Missouri, Travis (Roberta) Sanders, El Paso, Texas and two great-grandchildren, Violet Mae and Harvey Sanders, El Paso, Texas; a sister Evelyn (Larry) Vickers of Mt. Carmel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Cedric, Robert, Nova and Elmer Seaton; sisters Oma Seaton and Shirley Glenn; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert (Bobbie) and Mary Ellen Sparks, and grandson James Allen Sanders.

Clayton was a member of Wabash Presbyterian Church in Orio.  He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force.  He worked at Marathon Oil Company in Bridgeport, IL for 24 years, retiring in July 1986.  He built a four-car garage putting in a car wash, planning to wash cars for people in retirement. However, in 1996 Clayton was hired as custodian at Allendale School, which he thoroughly enjoyed for 16 years, retiring at age 82.  He was affectionately called the Mop Man and Mr. Cleaner by students!  When his health prevented doing woodworking which he enjoyed throughout the years, his greatest enjoyment was riding around town in his golf cart stopping to visit whoever was outside.

William L. McCorkle, 99

William L. McCorkle, 99, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Friday, March 18, 2022 at Oakview Heights Nursing and Rehab surrounded by his loving family.

 Bill was born January 1, 1923, the son of Allie and Pearl (Benton) McCorkle in Phillipstown, Illinois.  He married the love of his life, Frances Bernice Graham on November 15, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.   They celebrated 80 years of marriage together. William farmed throughout his lifetime. He worked in the oil field, and was road commissioner for nine years in road district 3 in Wabash County.

 Bill was a member of Keensburg Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping and traveling, he liked to go fishing and do woodworking projects. His family was very important to him, he loved nothing more than watching his grandchildren grow and begin their own families.

 Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his wife, Frances; children Sharon Shivers (special friend Larry Jolley) of Evansville Indiana and Steve (Chris) McCorkle; grandchildren,  Cindy (Dan) Morel, Brad (Will) Rutter, Chris (Dan) Patterson, Jamie (Chris) McCorkle, Stefanie (Don) Price; great grandchildren, Elliot McCorkle, Sarah McCorkle, Kaleigh Price, Kara Price, Allie Wigginton, Rachel Wiggenton, Brady Patterson, Emily Patterson; and great great grandchildren Weston and Jaemyn Wigginton; and brother, Jim McCorkle of Browns, Illinois.  

 William was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lettie Copelin and Margaret Craig.

Sharon Kaye Singer, 69

Sharon Kaye Singer, 69, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on September 11, 1952, in Great Falls, Montana, the daughter of Don and Geraldine (Griffith) Seal. On January 1, 1971, she married Rick Singer and together they have enjoyed fifty-one years of marriage.

Sharon worked thirty-plus years as a nail technician. She loved her work that she was very talented in, and the many friendships she made with her clients. She loved cooking, especially holiday meals for her family when her health would allow. She enjoyed shopping and working in the garden. Sharon loved animals. She and Rick enjoyed raising Schnauzers together. She loved her family dearly and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Sharon was a member of the Church of Christ. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Sharon leaves behind her loving husband, Rick; children, Alisha Lockhart of Mount Carmel, IL, Carrie (Jeff) Smith of Thompsonville, IL, Ryan (Crystal) Singer of Olney, IL, and Russell (Tracy) Singer of Mount Carmel, IL; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia (Joe) Woodring of Bowling Green, KY, and Lynette Beauligmann of Clearwater, FL.

Linda Kay Harper, 73

Linda Kay Harper, 73, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 4, 1948, in Princeton, Indiana, to Mylian E. and Helen (Finn) Anthis. Linda is the youngest of ten kids.

She was a 1967 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School Class. Later in life, she attended Wabash Valley College earning an Associate in Business with honors. She worked various jobs throughout her life, but being a wife, mom, nana/grandma were her favorites.

On December 23, 1967, she married George Harper at Pentecostal Assembly of God by Rev. James Eastman. Together they shared fifty-four years of marriage. Linda loved the Lord and her family. In her spare time, she liked to cook, experiment with new recipes, enjoyed candy making, shopping, and spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

She is survived by her husband, George, and their four children, Caroline (Charles) Trimble, of Allendale, Michele Harper of Bridgeport, Bryan Harper of Mt. Carmel, and Loretta (Brian) Monts of Olney; siblings, Esther Litherland, of Mt. Carmel, and Patsy Hillyard, of Winslow, Indiana; grandchildren, Brooke (Chase) Ziegler, Daylen Trimble, Cecilia (Cory) Vinnedge, Faith, Jonas, Gabriel and Olivia Trimble; Sara (Nick) Kieffer, Lynsey (Chad) Pixley; Miranda McCowen; great-grandchildren, Dean, Luke, John, Baby #4 (due June) Ziegler, Charleigh, Eleanor and Teddy Vinnedge, Camden, Calrissia, Cathaleen Kieffer, Baby Pixley (due July), Raylan McCowen, Brooklyn and Braelyn Mitchell. She shared a special friendship with her niece, Mickie (Rosevelt) Robinson, III, of Dayton, Ohio, and Sandy Cook, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings, grandchild, Sadie Mae Ahlfield Harper, and great-grandchild Ryne Kieffer.

Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, March 19, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home. A Graveside Service for Linda will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Delia Christine Keepes, 50

Delia Christine Keepes, 50, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2022, at home. She was born on January 8, 1972, in Mount Carmel, the daughter of Ronald and Frances (Lashbrook) Oskins.

Chris worked as a dietician for Oakview Nursing Home for thirty-five years. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching her favorite show, The Walking Dead, while enjoying her favorite drink, Pepsi Cola. Chris loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Chris leaves behind her sons, Jaxsun Keepes, Lee (Josie) Keepes; daughters, Raven (Jordan) Gillihan, Rashandra Hurt and Autumn Keepes; grandchildren, Kaleb Keepes, Hunter Keepes, Declan Gillihan, Hadley Hurt, Damon Gillihan and Hudson Gillihan; brothers, Randall Hoehn, Rodney Hoehn; one sister, Heather (Erik) Rost; grandmother, Mary Crawley, many loved nieces, and nephews.

Gary Wayne Garner, 78

Gary Wayne Garner, 78, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, in his home surrounded by family.  He was born on December 2, 1943 in Wabash County, Illinois, the son of Robert and Doris (Hortin) Garner.  Gary married his high school sweetheart, Lois Jean Cowling, on September 25, 1945, at Antioch church, and they enjoyed forty-eight years of marriage together before her passing in 2012.  They were members of Heartland Worship Center in Mount Carmel, Illinois.

Gary worked at Speth Plumbing, Snap-On-Tools, and then Amax Coal Company for many years, where he was an underground foreman and went by the nickname “Scobey-Duck”.  He later started the family lawnmower repair business, Garner’s Small Engines, and also raised New Zealand white rabbits.  Gary enjoyed listening to country and gospel music.  He loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing, especially at their river cabin where he would take his boat out and run lines.

Gary will be remembered by his three children, Sherry (Mark) Salaman of McMinnville, TN, Brad (Loraine) Garner of Mount Carmel, IL, and Cindy Frayser of Mount Carmel, IL; grandchildren, Matthew Baker, Stephen (Kristen) Salaman, Chelsea (Alex) Welcome, Ryan Salaman, Brianna (Andrew) Spencer, Logan (Emily) Garner, Brandon Reed and Chris Reed; fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Staretta) Garner of Albion, IL; sister in law, Joyce Garner of Bone Gap, IL; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; infant daughter, Christina; grandson, Richard L. Reed III; granddaughter, Brittany; and brother, David Garner.

Howard J. Maurice, 89

Howard J. Maurice, 89, of Gulfport, Mississippi, formerly of Bellmont, Illinois, passed away Monday, March 7, 2022, at Canon Hospice in Gulfport. He was born on June 24, 1932, in Bellmont, Illinois, the son of George and Flora May (Bare) Maurice. Howard married Phyllis Knust, and after her passing, he married Eleanor Wampler on September 27, 1980.

Howard faithfully served his Country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked as a supervisor at Snap-On-Tools in Mount Carmel. He was a hard worker, very proud of his work and the many friendships he made while working there. Howard enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of the Mount Carmel Golf Course. He was instrumental in organizing the Senior Golf League.

Howard leaves behind his loving wife of forty-one years, Eleanor Maurice of MS; one son, Jandy Maurice, and his wife Marlane of New Jersey; stepchildren, Mark Wampler and his wife Kathy of Gulfport, MS, Brad Wampler and his wife Mindy of Allendale, IL, and Kevin Wampler of Spencer, IN; step grandchildren, Elly Rose Richards, Amanda Sue Jenkins, Jessie Wampler, and Joe Wampler.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Phyllis; son, Jeffery Maurice; and one brother, George Maurice.

Arrion Shuntal Swanigan, 39

Arrion Shuntal Swanigan, 39, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, March 7, 2022, surrounded by his River Oaks family.

 He was born September 1, 1982, in Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Aaron and Angela Swanigan. Arrion lived at River Oaks since June of 2009. While living at River Oaks, he enjoyed attending WAVE and both were considered his “family.”  Arrion had expressive eyes, an infectious smile, and a gentle heart.

 He will be missed by his River Oak and WAVE family. A special mention to his dear friend, Vickie.

 A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Charles Robert Wilkinson, 75

Charles Robert Wilkinson, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born April 10, 1946, in Princeton, Indiana, the son of Earl and Wilma “Jean” (Stewart) Wilkinson. He married Carol Sue “Susie” Cravens on April 2, 1974, and they have been together just short of forty-eight years.

Charles faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He worked many years as an engineer for General Telephone & Electronics Corporation, (GTE), where he retired. For relaxation, he and Susie enjoyed camping at many area campgrounds. Charles enjoyed fishing, particularly when his grandsons were able to join him. He grew an abundant garden and enjoyed taking care of his yard. He was handy at carpentry projects for the family home. Charles was very generous in giving to others. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family dearly. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Charles leaves behind his loving wife, Susie; daughters, Gussie Dickenson and husband Glenn of Owensville, IN, and Michelle Wilkinson of Tampa FL; three grandchildren, Chelse Wilkinson, Dylan Stefanich and Colton Stefanich; brothers, Larry (Judy) Wilkinson and Tim (Karole) Wilkinson; sisters, Carolyn (Gary) Pittsford and Connie (Fred) Rieffel; many loved nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Willa Mae Davis, 85

Mrs. Willa Mae Davis, 85, of Salem, Kentucky, passed away at Livingston Hospital and Healthcare Services in Salem, Ky.

She was the wife of the late Rev Paul A Davis, daughter of the late Rev Frank (Willa) Peach and mother of Bradford (Robin) Davis.

Willa Mae was born on March 6, 1936 in Elgin, Illinois. She was raised in Mt. Carmel, Illinois where she attended Gospel Assembly Church and Mt. Carmel public schools, graduating from Mt. Carmel High School in the class of 1954.

She and Paul A. Davis were united in marriage on April 12, 1956 and they enjoyed 55 years of serving God together until his death on January 2, 2014.

She served faithfully as a Pastor's wife and homemaker for many years in Lake Jackson, Texas while caring for her 3 sons, Warren, Brad and Joel. In her latter years she moved to Salem, Kentucky; enjoying many phone conversations with her family and friends throughout the States. A cup of coffee and game of scrabble were always in ready for whoever would come to her door.

She is survived by her son, Bradford (Robin) Davis, of Henderson, TN; three sisters, Mary Cooley of Mt. Carmel, IL, Nancy (Don) Lawson of Spring, TX, and Rachel Martin of Porter, TX; four brothers, John (Beverly) Peach of Mt. Carmel, IL, Bob (Leona) Peach of Effingham,, IL, and David (Barbara) Peach of Spring, TX, Tom Peach of Spring, TX; grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Hardison, Summer (Jake) Leniger, and Amy (Patrick) Leonard; great grandchildren, Brent, Aly, Jackie, and Zealand.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Aubrey Davis; sons, Warren Keith Davis, Joel Martin Davis; sisters, Hope DeLuna and Darlena Williams; her parents Rev Frank and Willa Wisehart Peach.

Willa Mae was a devout, lifelong Christian. She loved her God, her family and her Bible. She will be greatly missed by her family and many special friends. A special thanks to Betty Woodruff for her friendship up to the very end of her life.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Gospel Kingdom Church, 1440 W. 3rd Street, Mt. Carmel, IL. Visitation will be from 12:00 until time of service.

Clyde Lenard Doyle, 88

Clyde Lenard Doyle, 88, of Princeton, Indiana, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022, Scenic Hills Nursing Home in Ferdinand, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on June 12, 1933, the son of Oscar and Pearl (Wells) Doyle. He married Maxine Baker in 1982 and they have enjoyed forty years together.

Clyde faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Post 25 in Princeton, IN, and a Life Member of the VFW Post 1114 in Evansville, IN. He attended Lindsay Wilson College in Kentucky. Clyde worked for Sears for a number of years and owned and operated the Sears Catalog Store in Mount Carmel, Illinois. He was a member of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Club. Clyde will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Clyde leaves behind his loving wife, Maxine; five children, Barrett (Jan) Doyle, Vanessa (Steve) Kohlmeier, Gena Swift, Stephen (Tami) Hack, Deborah (Ray) Wolfe; fifteen grandchildren, Kaytlyn Gray, Christian Doyle, Corbin Doyle, Colson Doyle, Kannan Horton, Karman Doyle, Caedmon Doyle, Seth Doyle, Samantha Jordan, Heath Kohlmeier, Haley Kidd, Dylan Swift, Dakota Mason, Edwin Roman, Raymond Cintron; and nine great-grandchildren.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lily Doyle, Beulah Doyle; one brother, Dennis Doyle.

Graveside Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 07, 2022, at Highland Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Mark Richison officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted to honor Clyde’s service to his country.

Mary Lou Scales, 88

Mary Lou Scales passed away peacefully on October 12, 2021.  She was born on March 5, 1933, in Grandview, Indiana.  Mary Lou was the daughter of Virgil and Frances (Keneipp) Scales. 

She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1951 and attended DePaul School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri.  Mary Lou worked as a registered nurse in Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and California.  She planted her roots in San Francisco.  Mary Lou loved to travel with her friends to different countries.  Australia was her favorite.

Mary Lou is survived by her sister Jorita Rugen and brother Mike Scales; nieces and nephews, John (Theresa) Youngman, JoAnn (Edward) Hauck, Molly (Daniel) Rupprecht, William (Laura) Thomas, James (Margaret Balmes) Thomas, Susan Murphy, David (Katherine) Rugen, Michael (Julie) Rugen and Sandra (Jeff) Ahnafield; as well as several great nieces and nephews.  She leaves behind her many cherished friends in Sunnyvale, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Virginia Ann Scales, Deloris Thomas and Faylene Youngman; her nieces, Nancy Carr and Sue Downey; and her great niece Maura Repprecht.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cumberland Trace and Heritage Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion.

Janice E. (Morgan) Clendenin, 62

Janice E. (Morgan) Clendenin, 62, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois entered the gates of Heaven on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 2:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Hospice Care Facility, Henderson, Kentucky. She was surrounded by her family and caring staff. 

 Janice was born the daughter of John and Mildred (Yockey) Morgan on August 1, 1959, in Rogers, Arkansas. She was raised one of eight children. As an adult, she would tell stories of her family’s travels and the times they would all crowd into one vehicle headed across the United States. She liked to note the various states in which her siblings were born and what they had been doing at the time….and thus her love of travel began.

 On November 15, 1979, she married Rev. Ricky L. Clendenin in Atlantic Beach, Florida and together they shared nearly thirty-one years of marriage until the time of his death in 2010. This union was blessed with a son and a daughter. Together they traveled both in the Navy and due to ministry, furthering her love for adventure. Janice loved the Lord and her family. In her spare time, she liked to shop, travel, spend time with her grandkids and visit the beach whenever she could.

 She enjoyed working for over five years, until her death, at Vascor as auto parts manager in Princeton, Indiana. There she made many lasting friendships. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Paige Clendenin of Mt. Carmel; siblings Dianna White, Joan Coles, Patty (Robby) Robbins, John (Sheila) Morgan, Mike (Laura) Morgan, Ruth (Ricardo) Trinidad, as well as granddaughters Jazmine (Jacob Skelton) Clendenin, Brooklyn Clendenin-Peek, Missy, Lexi, and Keller Clendenin. She had many children that she accepted as her grandkids, Addison, Cole, Remington, Grace, Caroline and more, as well as many other nieces and nephews, friends, and beloved family. Janice was preceded in death by her daughter, Crystal Clendenin, husband Ricky Clendenin, parents John and Mildred Morgan and brother James Morgan.

Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, March 10, 2022, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home.  Funeral Service for Janice will follow at 6:00 p.m.  Burial will take place on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 12 noon at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion Illinois.

Shirley Jean Healy, 76

Shirley Jean Healy, 76, of Mt. Zion, Illinois, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

She was born February 27, 1945, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois to Harvey Cyril “Sid” and Christina Bernadine (Banks) Rutter.

She grew up in the Free Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel. She graduated Mt. Carmel High School Class of 1963. Then she attended SIU-Carbondale graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Most of her career in teaching elementary school was spent in District #348. Shirley retired in 2003 after teaching for thirty-six years. She was very proud of her career and the children’s lives she impacted. She worked as an election judge in the community.

Shirley enjoyed spending time with family and friends, she loved traveling, especially to Niagara Falls in 2015 and visits to San Francisco, California and Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and treasured her many trips to Wrigley Field to watch her team play.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Brian Jeffrey Healy of Mt. Zion, Illinois, and Ryan Joseph Healy; brother John (Marilyn) Rutter of Evansville, Indiana, and sister Louise (Charlie) Acree of Mt. Carmel, Illinois

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Charles Rutter and Mary Jo Gatewood.

The funeral service for Shirley Healy will be Monday, February 28, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N Mulberry St., Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Visitation for relatives and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Robert Leon Merriel, 82

Robert Leon Merriel, 82,of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 22, 1939, the son of  John Robert Merriel and Eleanor Ruth (Anthis) Merriel.   Leon married Carol February 10, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Princeton, Indiana. They had six children; John (Tammy) Merriel of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Lisa (Harvey) Howell of Lucedale Mississippi, Janine (Jeff) Hiatt of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Kris (Rick) Leveque of Browns, Illinois, Pat (Leah) Merriel, and Diane (Earnest) Bulin, all of Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Leon was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Military Police. He worked as a tool and die maker at SnapOn Tools for thirty-nine years. He liked to keep busy with wood working projects for the grandchildren and making crosses for the Baptisms at the Church. He helped serve the Funeral Dinners at St. Mary Church. He enjoyed fishing and watching old western movies. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great joy to him and always made him smile.

In addition to his children, Leon is survived by his grandchildren, Brandon (Sierra) Merriel, Caleb (Morgan) Merriel, Justin Merriel, Scott (Brittany) Hiatt, Jessica (David) Onyett and Jacob (Kelsie) Hiatt Tyler Leveque, Adam (Kiera) Leveque, Ryan (Brittany) Merriel, Lori (Colten) Cotner, Hunter (Krystal) Merriel, Malachi, Rylee and Alex Bulin,; twenty great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law Tom (Joann) Kieffer and special friend, Ellen Grounds.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents; wife of sixty years, Carol; and six siblings’ sisters Catherine Schwartz, Virginia Choatie, Bobbie Walls, Doris Renner and Lulu Belle McClane, Laverda Marie Merriel.

The Funeral Service for Leon Merriel will be Friday, February 25, 2022 at 12:00 noon at St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. He will be buried with full military honors next to his wife at St. Mary Cemetery, Poplar Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Lawrence “Chad” Smith, 51

Lawrence “Chad” Smith, 51, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 6, 1971, in Wabash County, Illinois, the son of Frank E. Smith and Carol (Johnston) Bledsoe. He married Hanna Chiarello on June 9, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and together they have enjoyed eight years of marriage.

Chad was a 1989 Graduate of Mount Carmel High School. He earned his Associates Degree in Telecommunications from Wabash Valley College. He worked as a carpenter and belonged to the Carpenters Union #546. Chad was a talented handy man. He loved being outdoors and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing. He was often seen riding his electric bike all around town alongside his wife, Hanna. Chad loved to make people smile. He was a fun-loving and caring man who cherished his family and his children and granddaughter brought him much joy. Chad will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Chad leaves behind his loving wife, Hanna; children, Lauren (Brogan) Smith, Laney (Carson) Smith, Blake Grimm, Nicholas Smith, Alma Smith, Lawrence Smith Jacob Smith; granddaughter, Marleigh Kay Elpers; mother, Carol (Gary) Bledsoe; siblings, Jacqueline (David) Seaton, Tracy Smith, and Brian Smith; stepmother, Pam Smith; several nieces and nephews.

Chad was preceded in death by his father, Frank E. Smith; maternal grandparents, Eugene and Bonnie Willis; paternal grandparents, Lawrence G. and Alma Smith; and special uncle, Rocky Bradley.
