Norma Mary Catherine (Wernsing) Berberich, 91 of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Oakview Nursing and Rehab, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on April 30, 1930 in Teutopolis, Illinois, the daughter of Leo and Lillian (Probst) Wernsing. She married Ralph Martin Berberich on June 28, 1952, and they enjoyed twenty-three years together until his passing on November 20, 1975.
Norma grew up in rural Teutopolis, Illinois. After graduating from Teutopolis High School, Norma served as secretary to the principal of the school. Upon her marriage to Ralph, the couple made their home in rural Mount Carmel on the family farm. Norma was devoted to working right alongside her husband and caring for their family, home and farm. Having been widowed at a young age, Norma carried on, staying true to her priorities of “faith, family and farming”. Norma loved cooking and baking for her family. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing, and embroidering beautiful things for her family. Norma was an active member of Saint Sebastian Catholic Church where she served on the parish council and volunteered in many other capacities. She was also a member of the Homemakers Extension Association, a lifetime member of the Daughters of Isabella and served as a 4-H Leader. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma is survived by her children, Ann (Arthur) Johnson of Evansville IN; Kay Smith, Ph.D. of St. Jacob IL; Jean (Donald) Morgan of East Lansing MI; Steven (Sue) Berberich,of Henry IL; Lee (Tamara) Berberich of Mount Carmel; Sue (Kevin) Pixley of Mount Carmel; James (Dana) Berberich of Dunwoody GA; Jill Cates of Evansville IN; Roy (Kelly) Berberich of Mount Carmel; Gwyn (Douglas) Smith of Effingham IL and Joan Henson of Mount Carmel; twenty-eight grandchildren, Brent Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Blake (Emily) Smith, Brandon (Charlotte) Smith, Jared (Katie) Smith, Tanner (Bethany) Smith, Tyler (Angela) Morgan, Bryce (Meghan) Morgan, Kacey Berberich, Jana (Matthew) Haskin, Austin Berberich, Matthew (Julie) Berberich, Joshua Berberich, Luke (Sydnee) Berberich, Jacob Pixley, Benjamin Pixley, Ryan Berberich, Ashley Berberich, Danyelle Cates, Taylor Cates, Drew Cates, Justin Berberich, Kristin Berberich, Callaway Smith, Olivya Smith, Alexis Myers, Logan Myers, Cade Henson; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Schaufler; sister-in-law, Liz Wernsing and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, 4921 N. 1400 Boulevard, Mount Carmel IL with Father Robert Zwilling officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Sebastian Cemetery.
The family will receive guests Friday, January 7, 2022 beginning at 4:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. for Visitation in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mt. Carmel, IL. A Rosary Service will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Debra Gay (Worth) Benham, 66, of Keensburg, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
She was born November 16, 1955, the daughter of Robert Paul and Esther Lou (Lynch) Worth. Her father passed away and Debra was adopted by her mother’s second husband, Larry Gordon Benham. Debra graduated in the class of 1973 from Mt. Carmel High School.
Debra was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Debra enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Left to cherish Debra’s memory are her children, Jennifer (Corbett Raines) Pratt, James (Amy) McClellan and Jacquelyn (Lionel Brown) McClellan; her father, Larry G. Steve Rex Miller, 65, of West Salem, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital.
He was born February 1, 1956, the son of Edward and Joyce (McKinney) Miller in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Steve graduated from Edwards County High School class of 1974. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church of West Salem, Illinois. Steve proudly served in the U.S. Army.
Steve worked as a tech for Douglas Cable for many years. He announced games for McLeansboro, Illinois sports, and in West Salem coached and umpired local baseball games. Steve was an avid St. Louis Cardinal’s fan. He enjoyed fishing; loved watching his grandchildren play sports and attending family chowders. Steve was Commander of American Legion Post #658 of West Salem, Illinois, and a member of Albion, Illinois, Moose Lodge #621.
Left to cherish Steve’s memory are his daughter, Misty (Dave) Taylor of Keensburg, Illinois; siblings, Karla (Donn) Westray of Villa Grove, Illinois, Lynn (Marty) Hogan of Manchester, Missouri, and Tony (Andi) Miller of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren, Marissa Seibert, Beau (Hannah) Taylor, McKenzie Taylor, Kenny Taylor, Satchel Taylor and Hank Taylor; great-grandchildren, Waylon Taylor, Jocelyn Brown, Keith Spore, Nolan Spore and Ezra Taylor.

Paula Jo Webb, 66, of Marion, Illinois, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021, at SIH Herrin Hospital.
She was born September 8, 1955, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of William Paul and Gretchen Jane (Hipsher) Hawf. Paula graduated from Johnston City High School. She was a member of Orio Presbyterian Church.
After high school Paula started a career as a CNA, working for many health care facilities. She changed career paths and became a beautician. Later, Paula decided to follow her passion for floral designing, and began working in the floral industry. She enjoyed crafts, flower gardening and the trips she took to Mexico with her family and friends. One of her fondest memories of Mexico was celebrating her sister, Jama’s, birthday there. Paula’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.
Left to cherish Paula’s memory are her children Chad Beaumont (Crystal Hicks) of Metropolis, Illinois, and Tiffany Beaumont of Marion, Illinois; grandchildren, Zachery, Austin, and Ciara Beaumont and Makayla Price; sisters, Alison (Curtis) Dudley and Jama Hawf of Mt. Marjory McGill, 100, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, December 27, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born August 20, 1921, in Keensburg, Illinois, the daughter of Charles E. and Pearl Ellen (Gray) Kennard. She married Glenn C. McGill and together they enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage until his passing on July 17, 2000.
Marjory enjoyed her career as a financial office clerk until her retirement from American General Finance. She dearly loved to cross stitch and spent many hours creating beautiful things. Marjory was a UK basketball fan and also enjoyed keeping up with both the Cardinals and Cubs baseball teams. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Marjory was a very good cook and loved to prepare meals for her family. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and was very kind to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
Marjory will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Kay Althouse, Terry Bender, and husband Fred; son, Tracy McGill, and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Andrew T. Althouse, Allison (Derek) Archer, Clint (Ashli) Bender, Patrick (Selin) McGill, Jonathan (Courtney) McGill; five great-grandchildren.

Patricia Jean Hunt was born January 16, 1927, in Wabash County, Illinois, the daughter of Homer and Gladys Mae (Brown) Miskell. Due to the death of her mother when Jean was seven years old, she was raised by her grandparents, George and Mary Jane (Thorton) Brown. She departed this life December 24, 2021, at Oakview Heights Continuous Care in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Jean was united in marriage to Hershell Ogle Hunt on September 8, 1944, in Lawrence County, Illinois. To them, nine children were born.
Jean joined the Church of God in Mt. Carmel at eight years old.
She is survived by daughters, Susan Webster of Bridgeport, Illinois, and Joyce (Dan) Hadley of Decatur, Illinois; sons, Dennis (Gerri) Hunt of Calhoun, Illinois, and Mike Hunt of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Karen Hunt Cokley of West Salem, Illinois and Marilyn Hunt of Jasper, Indiana; sister, Barbara Jerrells of Lawrenceville, Illinois; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Bolden of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; grandchildren, Mark, Scott and Dustin Hunt, Kara Hunt Gill and Kirby Hunt, Tracy Shafer and Brandon Massey, Shawn and Jason Webster, Jalai and Jared Hunt, T.J. and Zach Hunt and Chad Haley; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and eleven great great-grandchildren.

She was born the youngest daughter of William and Velva (Carol) Harmon on October 4, 1943, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Ada was a faithful member of Hope Fellowship Church.
Ada started her career as a short order cook at Walnut Street Diner; working for various other restaurants after Walnut Street Diner closed. She loved making cookies. At Christmas, she made cookies for her family, and, as a member of the Eagles, she made cookies for all their functions. Her favorite time was the Halloween party her family had every year. They all dressed up and all the family was there.
Left to cherish Ada’s memory are her children, Trenia (Mark) Wagner, Darrin (Bonita) Windle, and Rona (Jr.) Adams, all of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; a sister, Judy Monnett of Kentland, Indiana; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and Albert Lemond, a special friend for 18 years.

Betty was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Moose Ladies Auxiliary. Her church family was very important to her. Betty worked as an aid for Addius Health Care. She enjoyed listening to country music, going to Ag Days, fairs, community chowders and community events.

Gary Wayne Bassett, 85, of Bellmont, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born in Edwards County, Illinois, on December 23, 1935, the son of Stanley and Mildred (Gehret) Bassett. He married Joanne Woods on May 26, 1956, and together they enjoyed sixty-three years of marriage until her death, February 23, 2020.
Gary was a member of the 1953 Graduating Class of Mount Carmel High School. He faithfully served his country as a para trooper in the United States Army, which was something he was very proud of. Gary retired from Snap-On Tools after forty-two years of employment. In his retirement years, he took up the hobby of woodworking and greatly enjoyed that. He also enjoyed watching old western movies. Gary was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was very supportive of his children and grandchildren in all of their endeavors, and their biggest fan at the various sporting events. Gary was a kind man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Gary leaves behind his son, David Bassett, and wife Cheryl of Mount Carmel; daughters, Loretta Conn and husband Robert of Mount Carmel, Terri Smith, and husband Bill of Cadiz Kentucky; grandchildren, Amy (Frank Schrader) Baumgartner, Ronda (Kyle) Rigg, Derek Smith, Erik (Emalie) Bassett, Cassie (Dallas) Cook; great-grandchildren, Jayden Rigg, Skylar Rigg, Violet Hadra, Jaxon Schrader.
In addition to his wife Joanne, Gary was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister; great-granddaughter, Maggie Rose Hadra.

Mary Birkla, 53, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 13, 2021, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 3, 1968 in Mount Carmel, the daughter of Joseph and Diane Mae (Moore) Birkla.
Mary worked in the food service industry along with home health services. She belonged to the V.F.W. and Eagles auxiliary and was employed at both establishments. Mary took on many tasks, becoming known as a “jack of all trades”, never giving up until she got it right. Mary loved cooking for others and considered it her love language.
She enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, listening to music and spending time with family and friends. Mary is remembered by her loved ones as a bingo enthusiast. She was of the Pentecostal faith and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Mary will be remembered by her daughter, Deanna (John Duncan) Birkla; sons, Shawn Smith, Bruce Smith, and Andrew (Farrah) Smith; grandchildren, Eli, Travis, Taylor, Chase, Aden, and Riley Smith; siblings, Bill (Michelle) Birkla, Jim (Chris) Birkla, Darryl King, JoAnn Birkla, Betty (Wesley Sanders) Ellis, Laura Zabloudil and Jamie Linson; loving companion, Randy Batterton; many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Patricia S. Smith, 67, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 20, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Jack and Bessie (Nyiri) Rossiano. Patricia married Stuart Smith on June 20, 2015 and they enjoyed six years of marriage.
Patricia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who treasured her time with family. Among her hobbies, Patricia loved watching hummingbirds and cardinal birds. She also loved her fur babies, especially her cat Lily. Patricia was a devoted secretary for the IAM Union # 2293 and was proud of her union work. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Patricia Ann “Pat” Beesley, 91, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, was called home Monday, December 6, 2021.
She was born April 9, 1930, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of Frances Joshua and Ruth Marie (Deputy) Brothers. Pat was a member of the Mt. Carmel High School graduating class of 1948. On June 24, 1951, at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Pat married William Ray “Bill” Beesley and together they enjoyed 70 years of marriage.
She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
Over her life, Pat worked for Heath Candy Company, Mt. Carmel Telephone Company, District #348 as a cook, Ben Franklin Store, Dr. T. R. Young, and Bank of Mt. Carmel retiring as a teller. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Torchbearer Chapter. Pat and Bill enjoyed square dancing in their younger years and traveling together. She enjoyed sending greeting cards to family, friends, nursing home friends and her church family. Pat’s greatest joy was her family.

Charlotte Carol Johnston, 79, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 17, 1942, in Hartford, Kentucky, the daughter of Yerkes and Irene (Westerfield) Tinsley.
In her earlier years of employment, Charlotte had several jobs in factories, delivering mail and even coal mining in the underground mines of Kentucky. She became the first female boss at Amax Coal in Wabash County, Illinois, and remained there for twenty years. She was an EMT volunteer and returned to college in 1994 to earn a degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked for fourteen years in nursing before retiring at age 65. Charlotte was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She raised six children with great love and guidance and treasured time spent with them. She also loved her puppy, Harper. Charlotte enjoyed being outside tending to her pretty flowers, gardening, and fishing. She was a Kentucky Basketball fan and she often ventured out to spend time at yard sales, junking, antiquing and clearance shopping. Charlotte was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Charlotte will be lovingly remembered by her children; Whayne (Teresa) Johnston, Richard Johnston, Jeff (Tammy) Johnston, Lisha (Rick) Pohl, Lori (William J.) Dardeen, Kelly (Brad) Bolin; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild to arrive soon; sisters; Ima Ward, and Yvonne Allen.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mona Tinsley, and Faye Jones.
The family will gather for a Private Graveside Service at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Lorene Rutter, 91, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, December 6, 2021, at Oakview Heights surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born December 21, 1929, in Olney, Illinois, the daughter of Wallace E. and Kathleen (Yelch) Compton. Lorene graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in the class of 1947. On December 19, 1947, she married Robert “Bob” Rutter in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Lorene worked as a secretary/clerk for Sphar & Company, Allendale Gravel and retired after working twelve years at Wabash Valley Soil and Water Conservation District. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, served on the church council, and was delighted to do every task she was given. Lorene was also a member of the Wabash General Hospital Auxiliary and Mt. Carmel Women’s Club. She had many friends. Lorene liked working puzzles and reading. Most of all Lorene loved being with her family.
Left to cherish Lorene’s memory are her children Steven (Alice) Rutter of Georgetown, Illinois, and Stanley (Georgia) Rutter of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren, Kerri (Scott) Zorn, Douglas Rutter and Lorrie Rutter; and great grandchildren, Haleigh, McKayla and Jayson Zorn, and Koke and Karizma Rutter.
Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Max Compton, and Bobbie Kizer.

Jerry M Showalter, 85, of Tampa, Florida, died peacefully, Sunday, November 21st, 2021, in the comfort of his home. Jerry was born in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, on May 25th, 1936, to Jewel (Spond) and Verne Showalter. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and continued his education at Eastern Illinois University. Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. On December 1st, 1964, he married Sandra (Woods).
Jerry spent over 35 years in the machine tool industry working for Pacific Press and Sheer, Co. Then, for the next several years, he dabbled in the oil industry and settled in Tampa, where he owned and operated a golf car accessory manufacturing company, Tampa G Manufacturing. Jerry was an entrepreneur and inventor, developing many patents.
Jerry had many hobbies, from collecting cars to hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Jerry enjoyed traveling and was an avid sports fan. Jerry loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whenever he could.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Shea Showalter, and sons, Tracy (Joanne) and Cary (Kristen), all of Tampa, FL; seven grandchildren, Whitney (Justin), Madison, Rylie, Brian, Scott, Alina, and Sabina; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Beckham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Verne, his wife, Sandy, and his brothers, Gene and Donald.
Services will be private. Internment will be at Tampa Memorial Gardens.

Harvey Calvin, 67, of Olney, Illinois, formerly of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at home. He was born on November 11, 1954, in Mount Carmel, the son of William H. and Rosie Jane (Smith) Calvin.
Harvey was a 1973 graduate of Mount Carmel High School. At the age of nineteen, he began working at Champion Laboratories and was making plans for his retirement. He enjoyed being outdoors, riding bicycles or motorcycles and his daily walks for exercise. Harvey was a ham radio operator and computer enthusiast. He loved to travel any chance he could. He was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church and often attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Harvey was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He loved his family and friends dearly and will be missed by all who knew him.
Harvey leaves behind his children; Wm. David Calvin, Tosha Baker, and husband Mike; grandson, Vash Bruce Baker who shares his grandpa’s birthday; stepdaughter, Jamie Best; step grandchildren, Jayzale O’neal, Jaylon O’neal; siblings; Harriet Jane (Don) Peterson, Wm. Daryl Calvin, Rudy L. (Susan Harper) Calvin, Cheryl L. (Richard) Mitchell, Vincent Douglas Calvin; very special friend, Janet Newkirk along with her children and grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Zwilling officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Judy Marie Meier, 75, of Albion, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at her residence surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born November 21, 1946, the daughter of Theodore and Nadine (Beard) Hocking in Princeton, Indiana.
Judy was a member of the House of Prayer in Albion, Illinois. She was a deli manager for Borowiak’s IGA for many years. Family was the most important thing in Judy’s life. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Judy also enjoyed being a caregiver for her family.
Left to cherish Judy’s memory are her children, Cindy (Jim) Wheeler of Evansville, Indiana, Butch (Jan) McGee of Fort Branch, Indiana, Mel (Dennis) Shular of Spokane Valley, Washington, Bobby (Dana) McGee of Maricopa, Arizona, and a stepson, Eric (Kay) Meier of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three greatgrandchildren; three great greatgrandchildren; and a dear friend, Larry Judge.

Kathy Jean Litherland, 63, of Harrisburg, Illinois, passed away Sunday, November 28th, 2021, at her home in Harrisburg, IL.
She was born October 26, 1958, in Mt Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of James E. and Donna J. Litherland.
Kathy was an active member of THE CHURCH “of New Beginnings” in Eldorado, Illinois. She loved the time she spent with her family. Kathy loved anything Elvis, especially attending a concert at Roberts Stadium, and visiting Graceland. She enjoyed watching Parent Trap and other Disney movies, pizza on Sundays with mom and dad, and participating in Special Olympics. She was always excited to get to ride in dad’s airplane on different adventures.
In 1984 Kathy moved to Harrisburg, Illinois. CRA (group home) operated by Coleman Tri-County Services, later re-named Lincoln Street CILA. Her housemates of 37 years love and adore Kathy like a big sister. She became an active participant in her community and enjoyed working at Coleman Tri-County Services Developmental Training Program in Norris City, IL. Kathy also enjoyed taking piano lessons, participating in horseback riding, Special Olympics, community events, visiting with friends, riding in the pink Cadillac, and attending numerous events at her Church. Kathy developed lasting and special relationships with CTS consumers and staff throughout the years. Kathy’s Lincoln Street CILA staff have provided exceptional, loving care to Kathy. She will forever be missed and loved.
Left to cherish Kathy’s memory are her brothers, James Steven and wife Teresa; Jeffery Scott and his wife Sherrie all of North Port, Florida; and two nephews and a niece, Nicholas, Emily and Dylan Litherland all of North Port, Florida as well as Coleman Tri-County Services staff and consumers; Lincoln Street CILA housemates - Steven, Robin, Mike, and Mary Ann; Lincoln Street Staff; and special friend, Ron.
