Terry H. Simmons, 61

Terry H. Simmons, 61, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, June 28, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He was born on January 4, 1960, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the son of William and Vera (Daniels) Simmons. He married Ellen Sampson in 1991 and she survives.

Terry had worked for Paul John’s Construction. In his spare time, he liked to go fishing. Spending time with his family was important to him. The grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Terry will be missed by his family and friends.

Terry leaves behind his loving wife, Ellen; stepchildren, Jacqueline (Jason) Stewart, William Wiseman; five grandchildren.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mark Simmons, and one grandson.

In keeping with Terry’s wishes, cremation rites will take place and no formal services will be held.

Terry Wayne Brown, 70

Terry Wayne Brown, 70, of Newburgh, Indiana, formerly of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2021, at home, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on June 5, 1951, in Gibson County, Indiana, the son of Raymond and Inez (Pfingston) Brown. He married Judy Hill on June 30, 2007, and she survives.

Terry worked in the construction industry for many years for Zachary Construction. He enjoyed cooking at the Ribberfest competition and always looked forward to that event. In his spare time, he enjoyed painting. He had a love for all animals. He volunteered with the local Military Honor Guard. Terry loved spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Terry leaves behind his loving wife of nearly fourteen years, Judy; daughter, Crystal (Adams) Griffin and husband Thomas; seven grandchildren, Danny Griffin, Jennifer Griffin, Whittney Griffin, Nick Griffin, Latasha Chavis, James Griffin and Nathaniel Griffin; many loved great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond Brown; sister, Nell Corklee

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald, and Edgar Brown.

Robert Gail Hughes 71

Robert Gail Hughes 71, of Mt. Carmel passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 at his residence.

Gail was born February 22, 1950, in Princeton, IN, the son of Robert L. and Joan (Peach) Hughes. He married Martha Tennes on June 10, 1977 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel.

He graduated Mt. Carmel High School and attended two years of college. He worked as a machinist at Pacific for thirty-two years. He loved fishing and mushroom hunting, all outdoors activities. Gail had a passion for cars, motorcycle riding and rock music. He loved being around his grandchildren; they called him Papa Gail.

Gail is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Martha; children Brad Hughes of Mt. Carmel, Laura Gray and husband Wes of Evansville, Brooke Tate and husband Marc of Evansville; grandchildren Taylor and Zachary Gray, Chase and Cole Tate, and Lane Hughes; brother Kenny Hughes and sister Becky Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ROBERT E. MUNDY, II, 83

Robert E. Mundy, II, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born October 24, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the eldest son of Robert and Nedra Mundy. He was predeceased by both of his parents, his sister Martha Jane Mundy and brother William Guy Mundy.

Bob graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1955 and Northwestern University in 1959 with a degree in Business Administration. That same year he married Mary Schaefer of Scarsdale, New York, and she survives after 62 years of marriage. He and Mary had three children, David Mundy of Stamford, CT, Sarah (Greg) Ewald of St. Louis, MO. and Lisa (Kelly) Schroeder of Mt. Carmel, IL; as well as seven grandchildren, Robert Ewald, Andrew Ewald, Laura Ewald, John Schroeder, David Schroeder, Mary Schroeder and Anne Schroeder.

Bob worked with Mundy Insurance and Real Estate Agency, Inc., as Partner, then as President. The business was founded in 1913 by his grandfather E. Guy Mundy.

He was involved in banking for over 40 years as Officer and Director of Wabash Savings Bank, Security Bank and Trust/Old National Bank as Chairman and Director, and The First National Bank of Allendale as Director.

Bob was active in the formative years of Wabash Valley College. He was one of five original incorporators of the Wabash Valley College Foundation, where he served as Chairman for seven years. He was an elected member of the Board of Trustees of District #529 for 16 years, early in the development of the four-campus district.

Bob was 2-time Chairman of Southeastern Illinois Counseling Centers, a multi-county mental health service.

He was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church having served as Board Chairman and longtime Financial Officer. Bob was a member of the Mayflower Society, former President, and 50+ year member of Rotary, Masons, Shriners, Elks, Eagles, Chamber of Commerce, Area Industrial Commission, and the Mt. Carmel Airport Board.

Despite being born in Wisconsin, Bob and his ancestors lived in Wabash County since the early 1800’s around the time Illinois became a state.

Bob loved his family and church.

Friends and relatives may come to a visitation for Bob on Saturday, July 24, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church (512 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois). The funeral service will be held after the visitation at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Judy Ann Whitaker, 78

Judy Ann Whitaker passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at her home in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 78.

Judy was born the fourth child of George and Velma (Kaiser) Helton in Osceola, Indiana, on April 5, 1943. The family moved to Lick Prairie, Illinois, when she was two years old. She attended school in a one room schoolhouse at Lick Prairie. When it closed, she attended Bellmont Grade School. Later they moved to Mt. Carmel. She was in the 1961 graduating class of Mt. Carmel High School.

Judy was a member of the American Legion, Eagles and Moose Auxiliaries. She was especially proud to have been a member and to be the first female Past Exalted Ruler of the Mt. Carmel Lodge #715 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, where she produced the Elks Newsletter. Judy worked for the Wabash County Health Department and had previously worked for the SEIAA (Agency on Aging). She enjoyed playing billiards, painting and craft projects.

Judy is survived by her sons Karl A. Seibert and wife Dawn and Kevin M. Seibert; grandchildren, Andrea, Ryan and Caitlyn Seibert; sister, Mary Ruth and husband Charlie Kieffer; brother, Jack Ray and wife Mary Helton; brother-in-law, Dan Peterson; special cousins, Larry and Linda Kaiser; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Judy in death were her parents; grandparents; siblings, Eleanor “Norie” and husband Jack Nation, Peggy Peterson and Robert George Helton; and many aunts and uncles.

Per Judy’s wishes there will be no formal services and she will be cremated.

Barry J. “Joe” Randall, 54

Barry J. “Joe” Randall, 54, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 28, 1966, in Carmi, Illinois, the son of William and Joretta (Bird) Randall. He married Patricia Stoops on October 30, 1992, and she survives.

Joe faithfully served his country in the United States Army for eighteen years. He worked as a truck driver and greatly enjoyed that job. Joe was a kind man. He was always willing to help others in need. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking. Joe attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. He had a great sense of humor, loved his family, and will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Joe leaves behind his loving wife of twenty-eight years, Patty; sons, Timothy Berberich, Matthew Berberich; grandchildren, Quentin Boyd, Braydon Berberich, Katlyn Berberich, Evan Berberich, Logan Berberich, Brynlynn Pierce, and Aubriella Berberich; brothers, James (Bonnie) Randall, John (Renee) Randall, Darrell Randall; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

Ray Winkler, 91

Ray Winkler, 91, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Villas of Holly Brook in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

He was born August 29, 1929, the son of Millage and Fern (Carter) Winkler in Oakland City, Indiana.  He graduated high school and attended college, receiving a master’s degree in Education and Counseling.  On October 7, 1950, Ray married Altha Lou Dishon in Oakland City, Indiana.

Ray was a Deacon at First General Baptist in Mt. Carmel, attending church there since the early 1950’s.  He had a passion for the Gideon’s organization and what they did by providing Bibles nationally and internationally.  Ray was a teacher and counselor for the district #348 school system for 38 years.  He was a coach and basketball referee for many years, loving his time spent on the court.  Ray played in church softball and basketball leagues into his 60’s.  In his retirement years, he played tennis until he was 86 and rode a bicycle two miles a day until he was in his 90’s.  Ray enjoyed traveling especially to Texas and Florida.  Last year he traveled alone to Florida!

Ray’s greatest love was the closeness of family that grew up together and the special relationship and bond they created.  Several of these were Al Henager, Myra Webb, Melody Glick, Gregg Henager, Paula Carnahan, Phil Evans and Stan Evans. 

Left to cherish Ray’s memory are his children, Larry (Stephanie) Winkler of Vincennes, Indiana, and Steve (Deborah) Winkler of Port Wentworth, Georgia; five grandchildren, Holly Cork, Laurie Andrews, Jason Winkler, Jenna Gerbasi and Jay Winkler; fourteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife; twin sister, Faye Evans; sister, Mildred Henager and Maryellen Nelson; and a granddaughter, Jamie Wilson.

Family and friends are welcome to gather for a visitation Friday, June 25, 2021, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. (CST) at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home (527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois).

Ralph F. Raber, 90

Ralph F. Raber, 90, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at West River Health Campus in Evansville, Indiana.

He was born September 21, 1930, the son of Frederick Phillip Adam and Katherine Helena (Pfeiffer) Raber in Evansville, Indiana. Ralph graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in the Class of 1948, proudly served in the U.S. Army (starting in the Illinois National Guard) and attended Eastern Illinois University. While at Eastern, he met his future wife. On April 15, 1956, Ralph married Hazel Jean Reinders at Mt. Pulaski, Illinois. They made their residence in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 10, 2020, after 63 years of marriage.

Ralph played for the Independent Baseball League in Georgia. During spring training in Florida, Ralph came down with the mumps. He was assigned Dr. Ty Cobb, Jr. as his doctor. In 1950, Ralph tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies Farm League. He received a C-Contract in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

After Ralph’s stent with baseball, he returned to Mt. Carmel and farmed the rest of his life. He was a 63-year member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, serving as Deacon. For 43 years, Ralph served on the Wabash County Housing Authority Board, being Chairman from 1973 until 2011 for a total of 38 years. He was a member of the Wabash County Farm Bureau, serving six years as President; Land of Lincoln Soybean Association, serving three years as State President; Illinois Soybean Operating Board for six years; and, the American Soybean Board for seven years, serving two years as Vice President. Ralph was Past Commander of American Legion Post #423.

Left to cherish Ralph’s memory is his sons, Mike (Cathy) Raber, Tim (Davi) Raber and Jeff (Susan) Raber; grandchildren, Ryan (Erin) Raber, Abby (Craig) Watson, Gabe Raber, Nick (Kayla) Raber, Audrey (Ben Woodard); great grandchildren, Bo, Eli and Emalyn Raber, and Zoey Watson; and cousin, Richard Raber.

Ralph is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Ralph’s family would like to extend a special thanks to their friends Don and Brenda Bosecker and the caring staff of West River Health Campus and Deaconess Home Hospice Services.

Susan Annette Adams - Boyd, 56, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021, at home.  She was born July 3, 1964, the daughter of Bob and Lilian “Maxine” (Hufford) Adams.  She was married to Kevin “Scrappy” Boyd, and he preceded her in death.

Annette loved spending time with her family.  Her grandchildren were the light of her life.  Family cookouts at the river camp brought about some very special memories for her.  Annette enjoyed hanging out with her bonus child, Leanne, listening to music and reminiscing about old times.  She had a love for animals, and her pets Daisy Mae, Lexie and Trixie brought her great joy.  Annette was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Annette will be remembered by her sons, Bruce Boyd and Mathew Boyd; grandchildren, Ian Boyd, Blakelyn Boyd, Abby Fryer, Kayden Key; brothers, Mike, Billy, Randy and Danny Adams; sisters, Jeanie Wood, Janie Delgado, Joanie Tarlton, Helen Gillihan, Haddie Spear, Cindy Weekley, Nathalie Garrett; many loved nieces and nephews.

Annette was preceded in death by her Husband; parents; siblings, Sharon Farley, Bobby Adams, Timmy Adams, and Angela Adams.

Ralph E. Whitehouse Sr., 70

Ralph E. Whitehouse Sr., 70, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family.  He was born on April 9, 1951, in Wabash County, Illinois the son of Lawrence and Eva (Beck) Whitehouse.  He married Kathy Slaydon and she survives.

Ralph enjoyed working on things and was very handy.  He loved people, always helping anyone in need.  He greatly enjoyed the outdoors and some of his favorite pass time was spent hunting and fishing with his son, Jr., grandson, Aaron Foshee and his nephews, Jimmy, Hunter, and Timothy Ingram.  Ralph loved spending time with his family, and they cherished his love and guidance.  He was a great-hearted man, and his memories will live on forever.

Ralph leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-one years, Kathy; one son, Ralph Whitehouse Jr. and wife, Tiffany of Mount Carmel; daughters, Teresa Berberich and husband, Mike of Bellmont, IL; Tammie Whitehouse of Mount Carmel, Kay Phillips and husband Michial of Grayville, IL; eight grandchildren, Alicia Wilson, Ashley Hammond, Aaron Foshee, Lauren and Laney Smith, Christopher Price, Kaleigh and Aydon Phillips; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother, Joe McConnel; sisters, Eula May Ingram, Linda Fenwick, Sandy Stoneberger, Mindy Wampler; special niece, Janie Parkhurst along with several more loved nieces and nephews; very special friends and extended family, Roger and Vickie White, Laverne and Brenda Wall, Randy Wall, Bob and Linda Perry, Judy Flemings and Phil Slaydon.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lawrence, Robert Lee, Bucky and Norman Ray; one sister, Pammy K; nephews, Dusty and Johnny.

Robert E. “Bob” Bethards, 90 (Services Set)

Robert E. “Bob” Bethards, 90, passed away on October 28, 2020, with family by his side in Zionsville IN; formerly of Mt. Carmel.   He was born April 4, 1930, in Fond du Lac, WI, to Robert and Sara Bethards.

He grew up in Janesville, WI, and graduated from Milton College in 1953. That same year he married Norma Lorraine Deets and moved to Milwaukee, WI, where he began his 37-year career with the JC Penney Company. He was later transferred to Chicago, then Champaign, IL, and finally to Mt. Carmel in 1965.

Bob was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Ainad Temple of Shriners, BPOE 715 Elks, and was a 50-year member of the Rotary Club. Bob was a long-term member of the Wabash General Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and served in various capacities for Wabash Valley College, including the Scholarship Committee which selected recipients of the Robert and Norma Bethards Scholarship, among others. He was on the Mt. Carmel Police and Fire Commission for many years.  Bob played Santa in the Christmas Parade for probably fifteen years (although we don’t really know because it was a closely held secret).  Bob particularly enjoyed the time spent with family and friends at their Mesa Lake cabin from 1973-1981. He was very proud of his three children and five grandchildren.

He had a great sense of humor and loved the people and City of Mt. Carmel.

Bob is survived by Norma, his wife of 67 years; children Ann (Randy) Burgess and Robert “Bob” (Pam) Bethards, William “Bill” Bethards; grandchildren Amy and Emily Zanetis, Elliot Sides (Lindy) Evan Bethards and Jesse Bethards; and great grandchildren Nicholas and Addy Sides.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” May and brother James “Jim” Bethards.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 512 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, IL.

Reverend Harold L. Hughes, 88

Reverend Harold L. Hughes, 88, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born April 20, 1933, in Norris City, Illinois, the son of Marion P.H. and Lillian (Bryant) Hughes. He married Janie Lou Fowler on August 26,1956, and together they enjoyed sixty-four years of marriage centered on their faith, love and family until her passing on January 7, 2021. 

Harold was a sweet, kind and genuinely caring man.  He was a fourth-grade teacher for thirty years and he was well loved by all his students.  Harold was very instrumental in establishing the library at South School.  For sixty years, he Pastored for several Churches all over Southern Illinois.  He was a member of the Council of Associations of the General Baptists, serving on several of the boards that oversees the many ministries.  He was most proud of serving on the board of foreign country ministries and he participated in many mission trips.  He frequented General Baptist Nursing home in Mount Carmel, helping wherever needed and would often lead Church Services for the residents. In his spare time, Harold enjoyed painting a variety of things.  His paintings were a part of his spiritual life as he enjoyed bringing older, rusty things back to life again.  He enjoyed the time spent outdoors doing yard work.  Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was a member of the First General Baptist Church, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. 

Harold leaves behind his son, Lloyd Hughes and wife, Susan of Mt. Carmel; daughter, Lou Ann Scott and husband, Stephen of Mt. Carmel; six grandchildren, Samantha (Jon) Reeder, Wesley (Katie) Scott, Megan Hughes, C.J. Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Shea (Tristan) Lewis; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Leon Hughes, Carl Dean Hughes; sister, Coradell (Jared) Baker; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his loving wife, Janie, Harold was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Vickie Lynn Hughes; brothers, Bernard L. Hughes, M. Paul Hughes, infant brother, David Carrol Hughes; sister-in-law, Patsy C. Hughes. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2021, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Underwood officiating.  Burial will follow at Powell Cemetery in White County, Illinois, where Harold will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.

Charles R. Oliver 75

Charles R. Oliver 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at home.  He was born on June 10, 1945, in Harrisburg, Illinois, the son of John M. and Zellma (Ellis) Oliver. 

Charles was employed for thirty years by the City of Mount Carmel in the Wastewater Plant.  In his free time, Charles enjoyed playing the guitar with family and friends.

Charles will be remembered by his daughter, Georgia Hedge and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Joshua Oliver, Tyler Hedge, Tasha Hedge; five great-grandchildren, Ayden, Teegan, Leon, Ryker and Kolsyn.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Kenny, Gene and Joe Oliver; one sister, Vernitta Ewell; several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Charles’ wishes, cremation rites will take place and no formal services will be held.

David Keith Fortner, 68

David Keith Fortner, 68, of Grayville, Illinois, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Wabash General Hospital.

He was born December 11, 1952, the son of Jesse A. Fortner and Winnie (Sisk) Brown in Wabash County, Illinois.  He married Gladys L. Richardson November 14, 1998.  She preceded him in death on December 17, 2011.  David was a member of the Nazarene Church. 

David was a truck driver.  He hauled crude oil for Big Heart Trucking Company and later he hauled scrap metal.  David was a member of the American Legion.  His enjoyment was driving the back roads.

Left to cherish David’s memory are his children Angela Fortner, Bradley Fortner and David S. Fortner, all of Sharon Grove, Kentucky, and Amanda Shumake of Elkton, Kentucky; a brother, Gary Fortner; six grandchildren; and, several nieces and nephews.  

David is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Fortner and Winnie Brown; wife, Gladys L. Fortner; grandson, Elisha Blayne Fortner; and siblings, Eddie Fortner, Mary Adams and Ann Compton.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation Friday, June 11, 2021, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home (527 N Mulberry) with a graveside service following at 3:30 p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Jerry L. Spruell

Jerry L. Spruell passed from this earth on June 3, 2021 at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, IN. Born June 22, 1949 to parents Harry and Ruth Spruell, Jerry was one of eight children. He was a lifelong resident of Grayville, IL.

At the ripe age of 8, Jerry started his first job as a newspaper delivery boy. As he delivered papers throughout the streets of Grayville, he learned the location of every fruit tree Grayville had to offer! Like most of his siblings, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately following high school and was stationed in Germany. Once returning from Germany, Jerry used his charm, jet black hair, and metallic purple Norton motorcycle to swoon the love of his life, Glenna Spruell (Newman), they were married on January 30, 1971.

Jerry spent the majority of the next 30+ years working for the U.S. Department of Labor as a Federal mine inspector in the metal/nonmetal division. He was passionate about his work and he considered himself as the line of defense between a safe work environment and a workplace injury! He could recall a vast number of the citations he issued as well as the story that accompanied them. He and Glenna also owned and operated Main Street Tavern formerly Margaret’s in Grayville for more than 30 years.

When not traveling or visiting his grandchildren on the East Coast, Jerry served in various leadership roles within the Grayville Moose Lodge 1960 and the Mt. Carmel Eagles Aerie 3066. Through these organizations he donated an immense amount of time to charitable activities. He was a member of the Grayville American Legion Post for the past 50 years and was one of the last surviving members of the original “Leisure City” Pope County Deer Camp!

Survivors include his wife of 50 years Glenna Spruell, son Joshua (Danielle) Spruell, M.D.; grandchildren: Colton (Cassie) Spruell, Natasha Spruell, Zachary Spruell, Andrew Spruell, Madeline Spruell, and Austin Spruell; great-grandchildren: Dexter, Kylee, Shane, and Maison; Brothers: James Spruell, Tom Spruell, David (Connie) Spruell, William (Juanita) Spruell; Sisters: Leatha (Jack) Harris, Mary (Keith) Crackel, Rosalie Spruell, and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by both parents, his brother Sam Spruell, and his son Jerry L. Spruell, Jr.

Services will be conducted by Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville on Saturday, June 5th. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery in Cowling, IL. Timing to follow.

Sylvia A. Pfeister, 76

Sylvia A. Pfeister, 76, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at Ascension Saint Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on September 8, 1944, in Dubois County, Indiana, the oldest of nine children born to Marcus “Mark” Matheis and Marcella “Sally” (Merkel) Matheis. Sylvia treasured that she was born on her mother’s twentieth birthday. She married James “Jim” Pfeister on July 25, 1964, and he survives.

Sylvia was the Salutatorian of her high school graduating class. She went on to earn two Associate Degrees from Wabash Valley College and was employed for fifteen years as a school secretary. Sylvia served as an Election Judge for more than twenty years. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. Sylvia had a love of butterflies. She was known by her family and friends as the butterfly queen and proudly displayed butterflies of all kinds throughout her home. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband. They traveled all over Europe and especially enjoyed Paris. Sylvia loved her family dearly and her grandchildren held a very special place in her heart. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Sylvia leaves behind her loving husband of almost fifty-seven years, Jim; one son, Steven Pfeister and wife, Nancee; three daughters, Linda Pfeister, Jane Pfeister, Suzanne Murrie and husband, Dan; two grandchildren, Sally Murrie and Mack Murrie who was born just last week; brothers, Tim (Christine) Matheis, Eddie (Karla) Matheis; sisters, Cyrilla Matheis, Andrea (Charlie) Shepard, Christine Russell, Anna Knight, Rosie (Dan) Collins; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Brad Matheis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Zwilling Officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Family and friends may gather for a visitation from 2:00 p.m.– 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 6, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Rosary starting at 4:00 p.m.

John William Geurin, 54

John William Geurin, 54, of Kokomo, Indiana, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, June 1, 2021, in Kokomo, Indiana.

John was born August 27, 1966, at Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the son of William and Peggy (Brown) Geurin. He was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. John graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1985 and received an associate degree from Wabash Valley College.

He worked for Huston Electric in the field of telecommunication. John loved a variety of outdoor activities. Hunting, fishing, kayaking, and boating were among his favorites. John was a happy, caring person that enjoyed life.

Left to cherish John’s memory are his parents, Bill and Peggy Geurin of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; a brother, Mike Geurin of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; aunts, Ann Marie Rolando of Carlinville, Illinois, and Theresa (Jim) Duncan of Gillespie, Illinois; cousins, Brian Geurin, Michelle Geurin Hahn, Jimmy Rolando and Julie Rolando Foster.

John is preceded in death by his grandparents; aunt, Diane Geurin; and uncles, Ron Geurin and James Rolando.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 125 W. 5th Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Meri Ann Catt, 42

Meri Ann Catt, 42, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2021, at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton, Indiana.

She was born March 28, 1979, the twin daughter of Terry and Lori (Selby) Catt at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Meri graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1997.

Meri worked as a manager for McDonald’s for several years. She also worked as deli manager for Houchins’ IGA for five years. Meri enjoyed bow hunting and spent many Sundays at the Wabash Bow Hunters Club. She liked to go to Tri State Speedway, swimming at Mesa Lake, movie nights with her family and cooking. Meri did not know a stranger. She was a giving person, loved unloveable people and thought she could “fix” everyone. She especially cherished her dog Ruger and her granddogs.

Left to cherish Meri’s memory are her children, Kylie (Tyler) Moore of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Jaxson Witsman of Allendale, Illinois; parents, Terry and Lori Catt of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; twin sister, Megan (Steve) Patberg of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; nieces and nephews, Stone, Satchel and Selby Patberg; grandmother, Margaret Garrett; aunts and uncles, Pam and Wayne Henegar of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, David and Kathe Selby of Olney, Illinois, and Lisa and Rick Gwinn of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; a special friend Tim Deal; and several paternal aunts and uncles.

Meri is preceded in death by many beloved grandparents.

Betty Lou Johnson Compton (Services Scheduled)

Betty Lou Johnson Compton passed away on November 11, 2019, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, in Rockwall, Texas.

She was a resident of Lakeshore Assisted Living for the past six years.

Betty was born on November 16, 1924 in Birds, Illinois, to Lyle B. Johnson and Beatrice L. Sandifer Johnson. At a young age she moved with her parents to Mt. Carmel, Illinois. In her younger days she worked at Thordeson Meissner during the war. She married, had two children, and became a single mother. She made many sacrifices along the way.

Betty married Herbert D. Compton in April of 1967 in Mt. Carmel. They were happily married almost 50 years and had a wonderful life together. Betty and Herb retired from Snap-on On Tools and spent many wonderful years traveling extensively, spending many winters in Florida and Texas. They made many wonderful friends along the way. She enjoyed spending time with her children and their spouses and many grandchildren. Herbert and Betty resided at Fox Ridge Manor in Vincennes, Indiana until Herbert’s death in 2014.

Betty was a great cook and loved to fish, spending many hours fishing on Mesa Lake while living there for several years. She enjoyed embroidery, needlepoint, traveling, and just having fun! She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliaries. After Herbert’s passing, Betty moved to Rockwall, Texas to be near her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed six years residing at Lakeshore Assisted Living in Rockwall, where she made many friends. She had many wonderful years to spend with family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Herbert, daughter Pamela Pierson Treni, and her parents.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Sandra Heflin (Jerry) and LeeAnn Macy (Kevin), stepdaughter Sally Wilkerson (Jerry), sons Steven Compton (Margaret) and Scott Compton (Marilyn). She leaves behind grandchildren: Keesha Peterson (Chad), Christy McPherson (Doug), Ashley Burns (Bruce), Erin Dale (Rusty), Brett Heflin (Elizabeth), Derrick Compton, Drew Compton, David Compton, and Sean Macy (Katie). Also Jackie Slatter (William), Scott Wilkerson (Sue), She is also survived by greatgrandchildren Allie McPherson, Ethan , Brayden, and Trevor Peterson, Clayton Dale, Bruce Burns, Ryder Elms, and Emmitt Heflin as well as Katelyn East, Taylor Payton (Tim), Jordan Miller (Tabby), Jared Wilkerson (Ali), Aaron Wilkerson (Amy). In addition, she is survived by five great, great grandchildren. She also leaves behind several in-laws as well as many, many friends.

Friends and family may gather for a visitation on Monday, June 7, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, with funeral services immediately following. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Evah Opal Veihman, 95, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation with her loving family by her side.

Robert L. “Bob” Livingston, 75, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, died on January 8, 2021, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital following a brief battle with COVID-19.

A Memorial Service will be held for Evah Opal Veihman and Robert L. “Bob” Livingston, Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Asbury Chapel. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend.  The family requests Covid procedures be followed, and masks be worn.
