Jo Etta Briggs, 77

Jo Etta Briggs, 77, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, August 10, 2020 in the comforts of her home surrounded by the love of her family.  She was born September 28, 1942 in Mount Carmel, the daughter of Jon Chapman and Thelma Birkla Leach.  She married Larry Briggs on August 14, 1960 and for nearly sixty years they have enjoyed life together centered around their family.

Jo Etta was a member of the MCHS graduating class of 1960 and proud to be a part of the marching band.  She and Larry were avid sports fans and Aces supporters.  They regularly attended Aces football games, were supporters of WVC players and greatly enjoyed attending the basketball championship finals in Champaign. Jo Etta was a member of the Women’s Golf Association and she and Larry both could often be found out on the course. 

Jo Etta lead an active life.  She liked sewing, quilting and working in her yard.  She was a member of Homespun Quilters club where she enjoyed the company of fellow quilters.  Jo Etta was a past president of the Parent Teacher’s Association, a member of the Mt. Carmel Women’s Club and the Wabash General Auxiliary.  She enjoyed singing with the Wabash Valley College choir.  She had a very loving, caring nature.  She spent time as a Hospice volunteer and was a long time Red Cross blood donor. 

Jo Etta was an active member of the First General Baptist Church.  She loved her church family and helping with ministries there.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Spoiling her grandchildren was a favorite thing to do.  She was loved by all who knew her and she will be dearly missed.

Jo Etta will forever be remembered by her loving husband, Larry; daughters, Jaymie Lang and her husband Bobby of Big Spring Texas, Chris Brown of Mount Carmel; five grandchildren,  Amy Lang (Russell), Ashley Born (Brice), Larry Curt Lang, Dylan Brown, Dawson Brown; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Corley, Shae Lang, Peyton  Shifflett, Cade Born, Dakota Born; brother and sister-in-law, James and Jo Ann Briggs. 

Jo Etta was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Howard Leach; mother and father-in-law, Ruth and Forest Briggs. 

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 13, 2020 at the First General Baptist Church, 120 West 12th St. Mt. Carmel, Illinois. 

Social distancing practices will be in place and face coverings would be appreciated.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2020 at the First General Baptist Church with pastor Gary Underwood Officiating.  Entombment will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Robert D. Cunningham, 80

Robert D. Cunningham, 80, from Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at Wabash General Hospital surrounded by his loving daughters.

Bob was born December 8, 1939, the son of Robert D. and Mennidean “Deana” (Morgan) Cunningham, Sr. at Rinard, Illinois.  He was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, attended SIU Carbondale and Indiana School of Mortuary Science, graduating with a degree in Funeral Service. Bob proudly served his country in the Army reserves. On September 10, 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Mary Virginia Deputy in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  She preceded him in death after fifty years of marriage.

Bob owned and operated Short-Cunningham Funeral Homes until his retirement.  He was a licensed funeral director for over fifty years and served Wabash County as coroner for over thirty years. 

Bob was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  He also was a member of Kiwanis, Elks, American Legion, Eagles and Wabash Valley Shrine Club.  Bob served on the Bank of Mt. Carmel Board of Directors and on the Mt. Carmel Library Board of Directors.  He was the founder and Pipe Major of Kyilindi Pipes and Drums and played the bagpipes for many events and funeral services.  Bob enjoyed being with friends at the “round table” for breakfast and having supper with his family.  He most treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren, and boating on the Wabash and White rivers and at Kentucky Lake.  Bob was a very giving person and was a private philanthropist to many.  All that knew Bob, loved him and he will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish Bob’s memory are his daughters Stacey Dunkel and her husband Chris, and Erin Cunningham of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and Angie Ball and her husband Brian of Kennewick, Washington; grandchildren Cory (Callie) Casburn, Drew (Ashley) Casburn, Katelyn (Levi) Johnson and Courtney (Lewis) Kieffer; greatgrandchildren Brooklyn Faith Casburn, Lillyan Elizabeth Casburn, Ellyanora Cordelia Casburn, Dayvanee Rose Stone, River Elizabeth Casburn, Sawyer Leeann Casburn, Theodore James Johnson, Roman Everet Johnson, Oliver Robert Johnson and Huck Christopher Kieffer; step-grandchildren Derek (Felisha) Ball and Ashlen  (Austin) May; great step grandchildren Bristol Ball, Bronson May and  Wayllen May; and sister Priss (Mike) Parmenter.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife of fifty years, Mary; and brother Patrick Cunningham.

Michel F.O. Harrison, 47

Michel F.O. Harrison, 47, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away August 3, 2020, at his residence.

He was born June 17, 1973, the son of Rick Harrison and Yvette Smith Wilkinson in Wabash County, Illinois. Michel graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and received a Bachelor’s in Science degree from ITT.

Michel loved the outdoors, working on electronics and with Ham radio.

Left to cherish his memory is his mother, Yvette and husband Donald Wilkinson of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; son, Jack Banks of Mt. Carmel; siblings, Christopher Harrison of Mt. Carmel and Neal Stein of Evansville, Indiana; grandmother, Gisele Smith; aunt, Colette Grigsby; uncle, Kent Harrison and wife Susan; and step-mother, Sue Harrison.

Michel was preceded in death by his father; grandfather, Joe Smith; grandparents, Janet and Ben Harrison; and brother, Joseph Stein.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Lake Froman Park shelter house from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. with a memorial service there at 3:00 p.m.

James A. Speth, 67

James A. Speth, 67, of Mt. Carmel passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020 at Gibson General Hospital. He was born May 7, 1953, the son of Lorna “Ferne” and David A. Speth of Allendale.

Jim had been in the plumbing and water well drilling business for 51 years. He joined his dad, David A. Speth and brother David “Danny” Speth at the David A. Speth Plumbing Co. in 1969. In 1976 the firm was renamed Speth Plumbing Incorporated after Jim and his brother took over ownership of the business. In 2016 he started J. Speth Water Well Drilling and Service.

He was very active in the community. He was a member and former trustee of the Allendale Fire Department. He was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of several fraternal organizations including the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 361 & 3066, Elks Lodge #715, the Moose and Sons of the American Legion Post 423 and the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Wabash Valley and Wabash County Sportsman Clubs and he was in the Men’s Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4276.

Jim never met a stranger; he was happiest when he was spending time with friends and family.  He enjoyed boating, attending Nascar races, traveling and delivering meals through the Friends of Christmas program.

He will be remembered by his daughters, Tia (Derek) Morgan of Allendale, Morganna (Jeremy) Thread of Mt. Carmel, and Whitney (Matthew) Bruce of Winston-Salem, NC; four grandchildren, Clay and Kelsey Morgan and Tripp and Taylor Thread; one brother, Danny (Vicky) Speth of Allendale; his nephew Chris (Carrie) Speth and family and his niece Heather (Brandon) Murrell and family; along with treasured friends Shad and Melissa White and Jackie Burnett.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gerald Merlin “Jerry” Stanley, 91

Gerald Merlin “Jerry” Stanley, 91, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away on August 1, 2020, at Walnut Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, in Evansville, Indiana.  He was born on November 18, 1928, in California, Missouri, the son of James and Evelyn (Karr) Stanley.  Gerald married Barbara Miller Rodgers on December 31, 1972, in Newport Beach, California. They were best friends and partners for forty-seven years.

Gerald faithfully served his Country in the United States Navy. Before the Korean War, Gerald was a Navy Radio Officer and experienced some activity during the Chinese Revolution.  During the Korean War, he served as a radio operator where his Russian language skills were used. Recently, Gerald was privileged to complete the 2018 Honor Flight and see again the War Memorials in Washington, DC.

Gerald had a great sense of humor and loved people.  He was a teacher, school administrator, and mentor to students from intermediate through college age.  He loved to watch people learn and had the ability to build caring relationships with his students and peers while working in school administration.

Gerald joined the Catholic faith and participated in his First Holy Communion in Rome while celebrating his eighty-fifth birthday.  In his free time, Gerald enjoyed spending time on the golf course with his wife Barbara, son Chris, family and friends.  He loved animals especially dogs.  Gerald had a sweet tooth and only ate a meal to enjoy his desserts.  His whit and sense of humor were legendary.  He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

Gerald will be remembered by his wife, Barbara Stanley of Newburgh, IN; daughter, Shannon Stanley of Barberton, OH; sons, Michael Stanley of Nampa, ID and Chris Rodgers and wife Tessa of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Suzanne French, Jeanette Nielsen, and Brian Walters; great grandchildren, Brandon French, Nathan French, Nikolas Holmes, Bryawna Holmes-Ludwig, Tyler Renn, Kaden Walters and Jade Walters; sister, Ruthann LaPoint of Millcreek, WA.  Also left to cherish his memory are Barbara’s family who shared many moments of eating, laughing and traveling with Jerry.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Delbert Stanley and James Stanley.

A celebration of Gerald’s life will be at a later date.

Reverend Donald Monroe Tharp, 90

Reverend Donald Monroe Tharp, 90, husband of Betty (Cunningham) Tharp, formerly of Mt. Carmel, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 1, 2020, in Phoenix, Arizona.  Donald was born in Irish Valley, Pennsylvania in 1930, to the late Donald Hamilton Tharp and Mary (Yordy) Tharp.

Donald was a life-long follower and servant of Jesus Christ, which became his life’s work and mission. After he graduated with a Bachelor of Ministry degree from Johnson University in Knoxville, TN, he then received his master’s degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Donald served as minister in a number of churches including, Baxter Christian Church in Kentucky, Shaker Prairie Christian Church in Carlisle, IN, Havre de Grace Christian in Maryland, Frankton Christian Church, in Frankton IN, First Christian Church Bedford IN, First Christian Church Virden, IL, First Christian Church of Albion, IL, Berryville Christian Church, and Christian Church in Sumner, IL. He regularly attended both Parkview Christian Church and First Christian Church of Mt. Carmel, IL. Throughout his life, Donald was invited to preach at camps, revivals, nursing homes, hospitals, and many other churches as it was his calling to share the love of Christ with everyone he could. Donald was also the administrator at the Altenheim Senior Living Center, Indianapolis, IN, the Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville, IL, the Hillsboro Illinois Nursing Home, and (formerly) Monticello Nursing Home (Oakview) in Mt. Carmel, IL.

Donald deeply loved his friends and family and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Tharp of Phoenix, Arizona; his children, Daniel (Connie) Tharp of Mesa, AZ, Robin Tharp of Phoenix, AZ, Donald (Cindy) Tharp of Victoria, TX, Marie (John) Gronley of Mesa, AZ, and Stephen (Lori) Tharp of Nashville, TN; his 8 grandchildren, Stacey Abel, Missy Ulm, Peter Judge, Amber Rankin, Desira Adams, Carli Tharp, Kyler Tharp, and S. Connor Tharp; 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother, Lee Tharp of Baltimore, Maryland.  Donald was preceded by his parents, Donald and Mary Tharp, wife, Doris Hanks, brother, Billy Tharp, and grandson Daniel “Danny” Tharp.

HELEN L. SHOAFF, 93

Helen L. Shoaff, 93, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at Hollybrook surrounded by her loving family.

She was born January 28, 1927, the daughter of Leo and Mary (Sandwell) Peter. Helen graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. On June 15, 1948, she married Ollie Shoaff in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Ollie preceded her in death in October 2001 after 53 years of marriage. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Helen and Ollie owned and operated the Sani Cream Drive In for many years. She worked at the American Savings and Loan, and helped Ollie at the golf course, when he was the golf pro in Mt. Carmel. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed playing bridge with “the girls,” going out to eat, working in her yard with her flowers, mowing her yard until she was 90, and decorating her house and yard for the holidays.

Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her children Richard “Dick” Shoaff of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Ann Winter and her husband Bob of Allendale, Illinois, and John Shoaff and his wife Kelly of Spring, Texas; grandchildren Eric and wife Amity Winter of Evansville, Indiana, and Emily Shoaff of Spring, Texas; greatgrandchild Layla Noelle Winter; Step grandchildren Rachel Winter of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and Gwen (Winter) Petty and husband Kevin of Florence, South Carolina; step greatgrandchild Madolyn Petty; sister-in-law Helen Peters; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Dean Hale, 79

Richard Dean Hale, 79, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at Wabash General Hospital.

He was born February 12, 1941, the son of Harry H. and Irene (White) Hale in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Richard graduated in the Mt. Carmel High School Class of 1959. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War.

Richard was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion and was a Mason. Over his lifetime, he was a police officer in Henderson, Kentucky, worked at Snap-On Tools, was a prison security officer in Florida, a freight pilot and a security officer for Allied. Richard loved to dance, reading western and Louis L’Amour books and shooting his guns at firing ranges.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lance Hale and his wife Molly of Watertown, New York, Kevin Hale of Evansville, Indiana, and Heidi Hale of Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren, Shiane Rivera-Hale, Faith Hale, Hannah Hale, Caleb Hale and Grace Hale; great-grandchildren, Mila and Tessa; brother, Ron Hale; and his girlfriend of fifteen years, Stella Ready.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother Don Hale.

Visitation for Richard will be Friday, July 31, 2020, in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with burial immediately following at Highland Memorial Cemetery. The family prefers masks be worn for the visitation.

Shari Ann Vaughn, 81

Shari Ann Vaughn, 81, eased from this world on Saturday, July 25, 2020.  Following a stroke and several weeks of hospitalization, she came home to her loving family who were privileged to be with her for the last leg of her journey.  

Born on August 23, 1938, in Vincennes, Indiana, she was the daughter of Harold and Gwendolyn (Schucker) Camp.  She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1956.  By that time, she had already met the love of her life, Mel Vaughn.  They were married on November 19, 1958, at the First General Baptist Church where they were both members.  Their marriage began with the adventure of Mel’s service in the U.S. Army.  Over the next couple of years, Shari traveled to Holly Ridge, North Carolina, then to Augusta, Georgia, and finally to San Antonio, Texas, setting up apartments in each new town so they could have homes off the bases of Camp Lejeune, Fort Gordon, and Fort Sam Houston.  As people often said, they were joined at the hip, and she was his rock for almost 60 years until Mel’s death in July 2018.  Though they weren’t able to go together, she has caught up with him now.

Shari worked at several places in town, including Chevrolet and the Pepsi-Cola plant. But her real calling in life was as wife, mother, and Grandma Shari.   A born nurturer, she loved to feed people and try out new recipes.  She especially liked to bake and was always sending something sweet and delicious home with whomever happened to stop by. 

Shari is temporarily parted from her daughters, Melinda Henson and Cindy (Steve) Yonaka; grandchildren Beau (Nicole) and Molly Henson and Trevor and Tessa Hargrave; and the newest little blessing, great-granddaughter Penelope Leigh. She also leaves additional much-loved family: brother-in-law, Mike Vaughn, as well as cherished nieces and nephews and their children.  She takes with her their devotion and that of a few very close, treasured friends.

She is joyfully reunited with her husband; sister Mary Lou (Camp) Zimmerman and her husband, Ron; sister-in-law Phyllis (Vaughn) Lagow; beloved sons-in-law Mike Hargrave and Rick Henson; and parents and grandparents.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 30, at 2:00p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery.  All are invited to help lay Shari to rest.

Diana M. Newkirk, 81

Diana M. Newkirk, 81 of St. Francisville, Illinois, formerly of Mount Carmel, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2020 at home.  She was born on February 28, 1939 in Wabash County, Illinois, the daughter of Doyne McGrew and was raised by her grandmother, Edith Newkirk.

Diana was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She worked as a cook for many years at the Fireside and Zinni’s Restaurants.  She really enjoyed her work and treasured the many friendships she made over the years in the restaurant industry.   Diana loved her family dearly.  She greatly enjoyed getting together and spending time with them.  She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Diana will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Terry (Claudia) Spore, Tom (Suzie) Spore, Larry (Charla) Newkirk; daughters, Susan Price, Debra Carie; grandchildren, Ryan Spore, Jed Spore, Jamon (Kacie) Spore, Josh (Natalie) Carie, Amber Preston, Marva Paris, Paige Whitman, Nichole Simmons, Nathan Spore,  Nestelle Spore, Thad Steffey, Rob Steffey, Mike Steffey, Marc Spore; thirty-two great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister, Laverne Richardson; and daughter-in-law, Robin Spore.

Diana was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Kenneth Spore, Bob Spore; grandson Logan Paris; great-grandson, Miles Paris; brother Roger Douglas.

In keeping with Diana’s wishes, cremation rites will take place and a private family burial service will take place at a later date at Oak Lawn Cemetery in St. Francisville, Illinois.

David Peter Kieffer 73

David Peter Kieffer 73, of Evansville, Indiana passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.  David was born June 7, 1947, in Patoka, Indiana, the son of Raymond A. and Mary F. "Peter” Kieffer.

In his younger years David was an auto body repairman. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Carmel. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

David will be remembered by his five siblings, Joe Ray Kieffer and wife Mary Lou of Mt. Carmel, IL, Ronald K Kieffer and wife Joella of Eldorado, IL, Virginia Goldman of Mt. Carmel, IL, Jerome L. “Jerry” Kieffer and wife Mary of St. Francisville, IL, Michael R. Kieffer and wife Nancy of McCutchanville, IN.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond A. and Mary F. "Peter” Kieffer; two siblings, Cecilia Bellessa and Raymond A. Kieffer Jr.

Peggy Ann (Allen) Ray, 75

Peggy Ann (Allen) Ray, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Wabash General Hospital.  She was born on April 10, 1945 in Wabash County, Illinois, the daughter of William Chris and Thelma (Axton) Allen.

Peggy spent many years as a managing cook of the KC Hall, Elks and Eagles in Mount Carmel.  She loved her job and making food for people.  She was a true people person and loved to fellowship with others.  Peggy loved her family and will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Peggy will be remembered by her sons, Keith “K.R.” Snider, Jr. of Evansville, IN and Johnny Croger of Mount Carmel; daughter, Winter (Hamilton) Kennedy of Evansville, IN; three grandchildren, Johnny Croger, Jr., Michael Snider and Elisabeth Medler; two sisters, Anita (Norman) Timberlake and Marilyn (Max) Schroder.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Patsy Jean Allen; and nephew, Bill Timberlake.

Charles “Sid” Rutter, 57

Charles “Sid” Rutter, 57, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 11, 1963 in Mount Carmel, the son of Charley and Patty (Ridgley) Rutter.

Sid worked at Champion Lab for fifteen years. He had a big heart along with a quick wit which made him a fun person to be with. He was jokingly dubbed the “Mayor of Lick Prairie”. Sid was a past Governor of the Moose Lodge. He had a love for the outdoors and music. He often could be found at Mesa Lake, Beall Woods, coaching softball or attending concerts. He was a big Aces Football and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Sid loved his family dearly. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Sid will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Tosha (Clayton) Hancock; son, Dalton Rutter; grandchildren, Gus, Kenna, Marli and Remi Hancock; sisters, Mary (Doug) Peterson, Carol (Jack Chandler) Perkins, Charmin Mowrer; several nieces and nephews.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Frank Sutton; and nephew, Clint Mowrer.

Jacky Joe Stoneberger, 57

Jacky Joe Stoneberger, 57, of Bellmont, Illinois, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2020 at his residence.  He was born on June 15, 1963 in Mount Carmel, Illinois the son of Chester and Deloris (VanMatre) Stoneberger.

Jack enjoyed spending time outdoors, deer hunting, fishing and camping.  He also loved riding his motorcycle and hitting the road with his friend, Rick Simpkins.  Jack was a member of the Shawnee Hills A.B.A.T.E.  He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

Jack will be remembered by his brother, James Stoneberger of Bellmont; sisters, Evelyn Jones of Mount Carmel and Linda Ward of Pascagoula, Mississippi; nephews, Tim (Keisha) Bruce of Theodore, Alabama and William Bruce of Pascagoula, Mississippi; great nieces and nephews, Annabelle, Madeline, Charity, Noah and Jason Bruce; special aunt, Shirley Stoneberger; and his furry four legged dog and friend, Bear.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen Stoneberger and infant brother, Johnny Stoneberger.

Robert R. “Bob” Hahn, 81

Robert R. “Bob” Hahn, 81, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at home. He was born on August 8, 1938 in Holdridge, Nebraska, the son of Roy and Thelma (Jones) Hahn. He married Athena deWeese on February 26, 2006 and she survives.

Bob served his country in the United States Army National Guard. He was employed by Sumner Mobile Homes and Midwest Transit for several years and then was manager of Cherry Street Estates from 1979 to 2000. Bob was very handy and skilled at any type of project around the house. He greatly enjoyed working with his sons on many of those projects. Bob was an avid sports fan, both on the high school level and professional sports. He was especially fond of the St. Louis Cardinals. Bob enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved spending time with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Athena; sons, Robert Hahn and his wife Tina, Jassen Hahn and his wife Jessica; daughter, Kristy Stephens and her husband Mike; four grandchildren, Bella, Allie, Lilly and Wyatt Stephens.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lee Roy Hahn.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 12, 2020 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.

Phillip “Todd” Sharp, 51

Phillip “Todd” Sharp, 51, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at home. He was born on August 5, 1968 in Mount Carmel, the son of Oscar D. and Mamie (Cash) Sharp.

Todd enjoyed being outdoors, especially mowing his yard. He loved Superman and his many trips to Metropolis Illinois to visit the Superman Museum. He always looked forward to another visit there. Todd dearly loved his family and spending time visiting with family and friends. His grandbabies held a special place in his heart. He will be deeply missed.

Todd will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Taylor Sharp, Raven (Jordan) Gillihan; grandchildren, Alanna Philipps, Axton Sharp, Declan Gillihan, Damon Gillihan; sister, Robin (Rodger) Crouch; brothers, David (Angie) Sharp, Kenneth (Kim) Cash, Michael Trebuth; and several nieces and nephews.

Todd was preceded in death by his parents.

James L. “Jim” Painter, 86

James L. “Jim” Painter, 86, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2020 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana.  He was born June 13, 1934 in Lancaster, Illinois, the son of Lester and Helen (Jeffords) Painter.  He married Eleanor Shurtz on November 6, 1954 and together they enjoyed sixty-five years of marriage before her passing on December 13, 2019. 

Jim faithfully served his country in the United States Army.  He was employed for forty-one years at GTE Corporation as a cable splicer.  In his younger years, he would often be seen coaching local baseball teams.  During his spare time, Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Jim loved his family, and his Church family at Parkview Christian Church where he was a long-time member.   Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Jim will be lovingly remembered by his son, James Todd Painter and wife Penny of Nashville, TN; daughter, Rebecca Lynne Sparks and husband Tony of Sesser, IL; four grandchildren, Patricia Leigh Phillips, James Kyle Painter, Daphne Marie Haggard and Amanda Nicole Haggard; great-grandchildren, Madison Grace Phillips, Katelynn Hope Phillips, Bailey Rose Lewis, Addison Brooke Suter, Emma Grace Suter, James Jonathon Phillips, Nixon Kikue Painter and Elliott Saburd Painter; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Gary and Bob Painter.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2020 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.  Social distancing practices will be in place.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2020 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Minister Bryan Heinrich officiating.   A private family burial with full military honors will take place Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser, Illinois where Jim will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Eleanor.

Dennis Keith Shields, 64

Dennis Keith Shields, 64, of Bone Gap, Illinois, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2020 at Wabash General Hospital.  He was born on August 1, 1955 in Highland, Michigan, the son of Jack and Barbara (Eck) Shields.  He married Sherry Robinson Cox on October 8, 2006 and she survives. 

Dennis faithfully served his country in the United States Army.  He attended Hyles Anderson College to become a Minister. Dennis enjoyed traveling and camping.  His family held a special place in his heart and he enjoyed spending time with them.  He was a member of Hope Fellowship Church.  Dennis will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Dennis will be remembered by his loving wife of thirteen years, Sherry; sons, Robert Lee Robinson, Jeffery Eugene Cox; daughters, Doreen Kay Powell, Candice Dawn Shields, Angelique Nicole Knowles; five grandchildren; brothers, Mike Shields, Dale Shields; several nieces and nephews; former wife, Sheila Shields who raised his four children; and Robert Lee Robinson who was like a son to Dennis.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; son, James K. Shields; and brother, jack Shields.

Donald L. McClane, 86

Donald L. McClane, 86, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at home with his family by his side. He was born on May 9, 1934 in Mount Carmel, the son of Charles and Sybil (Hill) McClane. He married Joyce Carpenter on November 22, 1952 and she survives. Don worked many years in the oilfield industry.

He worked for H&H Oil Company and for Andy Hocking, tending to his wells. He was a hard worker and loved his oilfield jobs. Don also was employed by Snap On Tool Corporation for nineteen years. Don and Joyce worked side by side for a number of years when they owned a feed and farm supply store. Don loved his family.

He was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Don will be remembered by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Joyce; son, Mark McClane; daughter, Ladonna Blevins and her husband, Don; Several loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Brown, Anna Bell Lovellette and Marie; brothers, Ed and John McClane.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Chris McClane; one sister, Wilma; brothers, Michael, Ray and Tom McClane.

In keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation will take place and no formal services are planned.

Barbara L. Lambert, 82

Barbara L. Lambert, 82, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at her residence surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on August 25, 1937 in Mishawaka, Indiana, the daughter of Theodore “Ted” and Virgina (Miller) Morgan. Barbara married Leo Lambert on November 29, 1958 and together they enjoyed sixty-one year of marriage.

Barbara was very proud of her family and treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. She graduated from William Woods College with an Associate’s Degree in Arts. Barbara was a member of Beta Sigma Phi an organization that brought many friendships and fellowship to her life. Her passion was being a homemaker for her family and she also enjoyed working at Wabash Valley College Bookstore for close to twenty years. Barbara will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Barbara will be remembered by her husband, Leo Lambert of Mount Carmel; son, Michael Lambert and Stephanie of Robinson, Illinois; daughters, Sandra Uphoff and husband, Chuck of Mount Carmel, Melissa Gibson and husband, Brian of O’Fallon, Illinois; five grandchildren, Alisha (Dakota) White, Davis Uphoff, Kirsten Gibson, Joshua Gibson and Brandon Lambert.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Wayne Morgan.

A Private Graveside Service will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2020, at Highland Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Gary Underwood officiating.
