The Wabash County Board on Monday approved the expenditure of $62,000 for the U of I Extension service for the year ahead. The amount represents the same funding level as last year. Commissioners also heard from Morgan Newell, the county’s newest extension agent, who has been on the job around five months.
Car Seat Check Saturday At MCFD
On Saturday, April 21st at 9:00 AM-Noon, there will be a car seat safety check conducted at the Mt. Carmel Fire Department located at 830 N. Walnut Street in Mt. Carmel. To schedule an appointment call 618-263-3044.The child must be in attendance at the time of the safety seat check. This event is provided by Project Cares-Dist. 348, Hope Pregnancy Center, Illinois State Police, Mt. Carmel Police Department, and All Our Kids Network-Wabash County Health Department.

Traffic Violation Results In 2 Arrests
Mt. Carmel Police arrested 40 year old Jason P. Nelson of Mt. Carmel after he was stopped for a traffic violation. During the arrest it was discovered that Nelson was operating a motor vehicle on a revoked driver’s license. The passenger in the vehicle, Cheryl D. Nelson, age 43, of Mt. Carmel was cited for permitting an unlicensed person to drive. Jason was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he posted $150.00 cash bond.
Alabama Man Jailed On Drunk Driving Charge By MCPD
04/14/2018-Mt. Carmel Police arrested 49 year old Faustino Martinez Armenta of Decatur, Alabama after he was stopped by police. The arresting officer reported that Armenta had and alcoholic beverage smell coming from his person. The arresting officer subsequently arrested Armenta for DUI and transported him to the Wabash County Jail. Armenta was given a breath test that indicated his BAC was well over double the legal limit to drive. Armenta was cited for DUI and illegal transportation of alcohol. Armenta was held pending the posting of bond.
Fight Leads To Arrest Of Two Men
04/15/2018-Mt. Carmel Police arrested two Mt. Carmel residents after police were called to 330 Chestnut Street reference two male subjects in a physical altercation. Upon arrival police were told that Cameron B.S. Brown, age 29, and Michael A. Herald, age 25, had been in a physical altercation. Both subjects were arrested and charged with domestic battery and transported to the Wabash County Jail for processing. Earlier in the day Herald had to be removed from a restaurant after he acted in a disorderly manner. Police then cited Herald for drunken pedestrian in the roadway after he was observed standing in the 200 block of W. 5th Street yelling profanities at the police. Both subjects were held pending the posting of bond.
Proposed City Budget $148,000 In The Red
At Monday night’s Mt. Carmel City Council meeting, commissioners got their first look at the city’s 2019 budget. And that first look contained a lot of red. Finance Commissioner Joe Judge said it’s projected the city will be $26,270 under their current budget that ends April 30th. But, that’s where any positive news ends as Judge said the proposed budget is $148,000 in the red. He is urging department heads to reexamine their budgets to try and close that gap. Something Judge said won’t be easy…
A public hearing on the budget is set for April 23rd at 4:45pm.
MCFD Back To Normal After Lightning Strike
Things are back to normal at the Mt. Carmel Fire Department after a lightning strike April 3rdknocked out several items including all communications. Fire Commissioner Rod Rodriguez says the damaged equipment has been repaired and it’s hope the city’s insurance carrier will pick up the bill on those repairs.
Water Tower Work To Continue For Another 4 to 6 Weeks
Rehab work on the city’s water tower near Wabash Valley College is continuing. Water Commissioner Justin Dulgar says the work to paint and update the tower is expected to take another 4 to 6 weeks.
