Witsman Responds To Critics Of City's Flood Response

Saturday night’s deluge and flooding caused a number of people to take to social media to rail against the city of Mt. Carmel. At last night’s city council meeting, city clerk Rudy Witsman responded by saying there was very little the city could have done differently to prevent the flooding issues. He said given the limited number of city employees, they simply couldn’t be everywhere at the same. And he took dead aim at the city’s critics saying they should take some responsibility for their own property instead of relying on the government to do it for them…..

Water and sewer commissioner Justin Dulgar said larger cities such as Evansville couldn’t handle the onslaught of rain either and Mt. Carmel was far from isolated in having issues.

"Emergency Situation" Causes MCHS Prom To Look To Return To Community Room

A good prom theme for Mt. Carmel High School might be, “What’s Old Is New Again.” That’s because it looks as if prom may be returning this year to the community room atop City Hall. The community room was closed for events by the city council three years ago as officials cited no elevator access and a less than reliable heating and cooling system.

But at Monday’s City Council meeting, City Clerk Rudy Witsman said high school officials had approached the city asking about the possibility of reopening the community room after their normal location was double booked. Fire Chief Francis Speth expressed concerns about emergency exits to the upstairs and Witsman said there are no guarantees the air conditioning units will work after sitting idle for three years.

The city council approved allowing prom to be held in the community room if Speth approves the emergency exits and the cooling units are functional. Prom is Saturday, May 5th.

Previously, the community room hosted prom for many years. Witsman stated that the use of the community room is a one time only "emergency situation" and it is not reopening on a regular basis.
