Student Senate WADI Food Drive Contest 2017

Through the generosity of students, faculty, staff and the community, the Wabash Valley College Student Senate was able to collect over 2,000 non-perishable food items to donate to the Wabash Area Development Incorporated (WADI) Food Pantry to help those less fortunate in Wabash County during the holiday season.

The 2,061 items donated to the WVC Student Senate’s food drive were the most donated on any IECC campus, and, as a result, a travelling trophy for the campus that collects the most items will reside on the WVC campus for the next year.

In addition to the WVC Student Senate, several WVC clubs participated in the food drive including the Teaching Our Youth Club, Science Club, Health Professionals Club, and the Ag Club/Collegiate Farm Bureau.

The food drive would not have been as successful without the generous contributions of several local businesses and individuals, including: Borowiak’s IGA, Buehler’s Buy Low, J. Wilderman Autoplex, the Knights of Columbus, Mt. Carmel Public Utility Company, Gottman’s Custom Jewelry, Wabash County Farm Bureau, Country Financial Agents Jody Smith and Bill Stinson, Holiday International Travel, The Smile Center, and Paul and Candy Ankenbrandt.

Members of the Wabash Valley College Student Senate delivered over 2,000 non-perishable food items to the WADI Food Pantry. The items were collected on campus during the month of November.

IDNR Approves Plan To Allow Gibson County Coal To Mine In Wabash County

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has approved an application from Gibson County Coal to extend a portal across the Wabash River into Illinois.

During a public hearing held in Mt. Carmel in May of 2016, Gibson County Coal officials explained their plan in which they intend to extend their portal from the Gibson North mine across the Wabash River into Illinois in areas adjacent to the north and east of the city limits and another to the south of Mt. Carmel.

In a ruling dated last Thursday, the DNR said the permit application calls for surface coal mining and reclamation operations on approximately 3,214 acres in Illinois and they found the expanded mining would not pose a threat to surface or groundwater in Illinois.

During the public hearing, company officials claimed there would be no mine subsidence in and around Mt. Carmel since a room and pillar method of mining is utilized. Since the coal mined in Illinois would be transferred underground and brought to surface in Gibson County, there would be no sales tax collected on the Illinois coal, thus not benefiting the state, county, or city in terms of sales tax.

DNR’s ruling was mailed via certified mail this week to those in attendance at the 2016 hearing that was held at Parkview Christian Church.

Culvert Pipe Replacement Scheduled for SR 56 in Hazelton

GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a pipe replacement in Gibson County on State Road 56.

Beginning on or around 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, INDOT crews will begin excavating and replacing a culvert pipe under S.R. 56 just west of U.S. 41 in Hazelton. Work is expected to take about a day depending upon weather conditions. During the operation, local traffic will have access up to the point of closure. All other traffic should use the official detour following U.S. 41, S.R. 64, S.R .65, and S.R. 56.

After the operation, to allow for compaction of fill material, there may be some loose gravel for a couple of days before crews apply asphalt surfacing. Crews will be monitoring the sites daily and will work to minimize inconvenience to motorists during that time. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
